The plastics center (SKZ) provides independent services in the field of plastics technology for the plastics industry as well as for public clients. It was founded in Munich in 1961 and is now one of the largest industry-specific institutes of its kind in Europe, with the worldwide monitoring of over 900 plastic products from more than 400 companies.

The SKZ is supported by the support group for the South German Plastics Center (FSKZ e.V.), in which industrial companies and associations of the plastics industry are represented.

The institute is based in Würzburg and has further branches in Halle , Horb am Neckar , Peine , Selb and Obernburg am Main , as well as a training center in Dubai . In 2018, around 420 people were employed at the various locations.

Organization / activities

The SKZ is divided into four subsidiaries, which are 100% subsidiaries of FSKZ eV and which each have “SKZ” in their name. These companies offer the following services on a private basis:

  • Testing and certification services for quality assurance of materials and finished products
  • Education and training of specialists and managers from the industry
  • Implementation of research and development projects
  • Certification of management systems
  • Industry consulting

history

The establishment of the Association for Promoting the South German Plastics Center took place on 20 January 1961 at the initiative of the Bavarian Trade Institute with the support of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs in Munich. The workshops of the Würzburg Chamber of Crafts initially served as classrooms for the first courses in the craft. Three years later, in 1964, the first technical center with processing machines and test laboratories was built in Würzburg . Also in 1964 the SKZ became an officially recognized testing institute for plastics. In 1972 the SKZ became a member of the Association of European Plastics Institutes (ADICEP). The first extension was built in 1974 and the SKZ certification mark was awarded for the first time. The training of the first plastic quality inspectors began in 1980 and since 1987 the SKZ has been one of ten globally recognized testing centers of the international hockey association (FIH). Another seven years later, in 1994, the management certification body opened at the SKZ. Further new buildings followed and activities were expanded to Dubai.

Work areas

Testing, quality assurance and certification of plastic products

The SKZ has a test laboratory accredited by the DAkkS (German Accreditation Service) according to DIN EN ISO / IEC 17025 and an inspection body of type A accredited according to DIN EN ISO / IEC 17020. It tests plastics and plastic products on the basis of their mechanical-technological, chemical-analytical, electrical, optical, thermal and climatic properties. Another focus is quality assurance in product manufacture and construction site monitoring. There is also an accreditation according to DIN EN ISO / IEC 17065: 2013 as a prerequisite for recognition as a notified body within the framework of the CE marking for construction products. As part of its accreditation as a test laboratory at the World Table Tennis Federation ( ITTF ), the SKZ has been testing table tennis balls that are used for national and international tournaments and competitions since 2000. The test criteria include the external appearance (color, lettering and identification) as well as the mechanical-technological properties (weight, diameter, ovality, recess height, straight running and indentation hardness) of the balls. Analytik Service Obernburg GmbH, ASO for short, has also been part of the SKZ Group since April 2017. This will expand the portfolio with a wide range of methods at the Obernburg location, especially in the automotive supply, synthetic fiber production, plastics, chemistry and medicine sectors.

Implementation of research and development projects

The application-related research and development focuses on the technological areas of component properties, composites, compounding, dispersing, extrusion, joining, material development, measurement technology, sustainability and injection molding.

Education and training of specialists and managers

In the seminar and conference area, topics from the field of materials, process engineering , tool technology as well as industry-specific topics are conveyed to specialists and managers. In the practice-oriented courses, the focus is on plastics processing or plastics processing (injection molding, extrusion, welding, gluing, etc.). During the courses, examinations can be taken according to DVGW, DVS and AGFW guidelines.

Certification of management systems

The SKZ certifies management systems according to international standards such as B. ISO 9001 , ISO 14001 , OHSAS 18001 , HACCP , FW 605 and ISO / TS 16949 (via cooperation partners).

Industry consulting

The SKZ is a service provider for B. for expert opinions in the event of damage or development advice for component or process optimization.

Institute director

  • Heinz Peukert (1961–1964)
  • Wilbrand Woebcken (1964–1982)
  • Hans-Hellmuth Schönborn (1982–1987)
  • Gottfried Wilhelm Ehrenstein (1987–1992)
  • Otto Schwarz (1992–1994)
  • Franz Haaf (1994-1999)
  • Burghard Schmitt (1999-2005)
  • Martin Bastian (since 2005)

Cooperations

The SKZ cooperates with the University of Würzburg and the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt in the training of young people in the field of plastics technology . In its function as a research and testing institute there is a. a collaboration with the Working Group of Industrial Research Associations (AiF), the Center for Applied Energy Research (ZAE Bayern), the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research (ISC), the German Gas and Water Association (DVGW), the Association of Material Testing Institutes. V. (VMPA) as well as with various industrial companies.

financing

In addition to remuneration for contract research, the SKZ is also supported to a considerable extent by public funds. The Free State of Bavaria, for example, finances 50 percent of the technology center that went into operation in 2005. The new direct injection molding technical center, inaugurated in 2009, was also created with more than 50 percent support from the Free State of Bavaria.

Memberships

The SKZ is a member of the Chemistry Cluster Bavaria , the Chemistry Plastics Cluster , the KINEMA , as well as bayern innovativ and listed in the "Competence Atlas Electromobility Bavaria"
