history
The FIH was founded in Paris on January 7, 1924 . As early as 1908 (London) and 1920 (Antwerp), hockey was a discipline at the Summer Olympics . At the 1924 Summer Olympics , hockey was not considered because there was no world association yet. That is why the Fédération Internationale de Hockey sur Gazon was founded in 1924 on the initiative of the French Paul Léautey . The founding members were Austria , Belgium , Czechoslovakia, France , Hungary , Switzerland and Spain . In the same year the FIH became a member of the Olympic movement. Denmark joined in 1925, followed by the Netherlands (men) in 1926, Turkey in 1927 and Germany , India, Poland and Portugal in 1928 .
In 1927 the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations (IFWHA) was founded. Founding members were Australia , Denmark , England , Ireland , Scotland , South Africa , the USA and Wales . In 1982 the two world associations merged to form the FIH.
Since 1928 (Amsterdam), men's hockey has been a permanent part of the Summer Olympics program , and a women's tournament has also been held in Moscow since 1980. With the field hockey world championship for men in 1971 and the field hockey world championship for women in 1974 , world championships in field hockey were held for the first time. The first indoor hockey world championships took place in Leipzig in 2003 .

The results of the last four years in the major international tournaments are included in the rating: Olympic Games, World Championships, Champions Trophy or Challenge and continental championships. In 2008, other tournaments, in particular the qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games and the World Championships, were included in the rating. The current year is taken into account 100%, the years before 75%, 50% or 25%. The update is carried out approx. 4 times a year after the major tournaments.
The world rankings are usually the basis for grouping at the major tournaments and for filling the qualification tournaments.
