Axel Freimuth (born October 27, 1957 in Duisburg ) is a German physicist and since April 1, 2005 rector of the University of Cologne .

Life

Freimuth studied, obtained his doctorate in 1989 (dissertation: On the transport properties of compounds unstable to valence ) and completed his habilitation in Cologne in 1994 (habilitation thesis: Transport properties in the mixed state of high-temperature superconductors ). During his studies he was a substitute teacher at a comprehensive school in Chorweiler and also earned money as a truck driver. After an appointment to Karlsruhe in 1996, he returned to Cologne in 1998 to a professorship for experimental solid-state physics . His main research areas within solid-state physics include superconductivity, magnetism and electronically highly correlated materials.

From April 2000 to 2003, Axel Freimuth was the spokesman for the physics department. After a research stay at the University of British Columbia in 2002, he was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences since 2003 and Rector since April 2005. He replaced his predecessor Tassilo Küpper as the 49th rector since 1919 . He turned down the call he had received at the end of 2005 to take over the chairmanship of the Jülich Research Center in order to continue to work as rector at the University of Cologne. From 2008 to 2010 he was chairman of the state rectors' conference and the Cologne science group. In addition, he is still involved in the German Physical Society and in the committees of the Max Planck Institutes in Cologne . He was re-elected by the Cologne University Council at the end of 2008 and confirmed by the Senate in January 2009, making him re-elected rector for a further six years. In 2014, Freimuth came second behind Lambert T. Koch from the Bergische Universität Wuppertal in the election of “Rector of the Year” by the German University Association .

Axel Freimuth is a member of the board of trustees of the Democracy Foundation of the University of Cologne .
