William Kurrelmeyer , originally Wilhelm Kurrelmeyer (born January 17, 1874 in Osnabrück , † October 9, 1957 in Baltimore ) was an American German scholar of German origin.

Life

In the US since 1882 , Kurrelmeyer received his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1900 . After teaching for a year at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster (Pennsylvania) , he returned to Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University to teach German language and literature until his retirement in 1944.

His son Bernhard (* 1903) became a physicist, his daughter Carrie May Kurrelmeyer Zintl (1904–1992) taught classical philology at Hopkins and Loyola College. In his memory, she donated the William Kurrelmeyer curatorial position as well as an eponymous professorship for German studies at the Johns Hopkins University.

Kurrelmeyer's research interests initially focused on the history of German Bible translations before Luther. As a result of his many years of research in this field, for which he traveled to Germany every year in the summer months, his monumental 10-volume edition of the Mentelin Bible was published between 1904 and 1915 , in the apparatus of which he recorded all the variants of the thirteen subsequent editions.

He dealt extensively with Christoph Martin Wieland . His findings on the so-called double prints , unauthorized pirated prints by Wieland, but also by Goethe and Schiller, and their effects on the text transmission of these authors, which he published from 1910, were groundbreaking . His research led to the invitation of the Prussian Academy of Sciences to work on its project of the complete edition of Wieland's works.

Kurrelmeyer acquired an extensive library of almost 25,000 volumes and 1,640 manuscripts (mainly letters from the 19th century, but also, for example, designs by Otto Ludwig ), which was donated to the library of the Johns Hopkins University after his death.
