Jorge del Castillo Gálvez

Jorge Alfonso Alejandro del Castillo Gálvez (born July 2, 1950 in Lima ) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician . He is a member and since 1999 general secretary of the Peruvian party APRA . From July 28, 2006 to October 10, 2008 he was Prime Minister of Peru . Yehude Simon was appointed his successor .

Political career

Jorge Del Castillo studied law at the National University of San Marcos in Lima from 1968 to 1974 . From 1984 to 1986 Del Castillo was mayor of Barranco , a municipality in Lima. In 1985 he was appointed Prefect of the Lima Province, and two years later he won the election of the city's mayor. He held the office until 1989.

Del Castillo interrupted his political career and studied constitutional law from 1993 to 1994 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. In 1995 he was elected as a member of Lima in the Peruvian Congress. Del Castillo has been General Secretary of APRA since 1999.

After Alan García's victory in the presidential election, Del Castillo was named Prime Minister of Peru in July 2006.

On October 10, 2008, Del Castillo and his cabinet announced his resignation. The background to this is a corruption scandal in which the Prime Minister was accused of accepting bribes for the granting of production licenses for oil and natural gas.
