Yehude Simon Munaro (born July 18, 1947 ) is a Peruvian politician . From October 2008 to July 2009 he was Prime Minister of Peru .

Life

Simon served an eight and a half year prison sentence in the 1990s for alleged contacts with left-wing rebels of the Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru . The indictment against Simon was carried out in 1992 under Alberto Fujimori's government . The interim president Valentín Paniagua finally pardoned him in 2000.

Simon was a popular left-wing governor of the northern province of Lambayeque when he was named prime minister by President Alan García in October 2008 . Previously, on October 10, 2008, the entire cabinet resigned due to an oil corruption scandal. Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo also had to resign due to tape recordings. The appointment of Simon was seen as a radical step García to save the reputation of the government after its popularity fell sharply and he was criticized in particular from the left. Simon has built a reputation for being a transparent politician who has made a name for himself in improving health and education. However, his appointment also caused amazement. In July 2009 he resigned as Prime Minister. He was succeeded by Javier Velásquez Quesquén .

Simon wanted to run for the Peruvian Humanist Party in the 2016 presidential election, but withdrew his candidacy before the election.
