The Johns Hopkins University ( JHU , German  Johns Hopkins University ) is a private university in Baltimore in the US state of Maryland . The top university , which combined research and teaching based on the model of German universities, in particular on the model of the University of Heidelberg , was founded on February 22, 1876. It got its name from the businessman Johns Hopkins , who left a legacy of seven million US dollars when he died in 1873 when he founded the university and the Johns Hopkins Hospital .

To date, a total of 37 Nobel Prize winners and one Fields Medal Prize winner have been associated with the university . In the current international university rankings, the university is assigned to the 20 and 10 best universities in the world respectively and is one of the most prestigious university institutions in the country.

Academic profile

Research and Teaching

The JHU is a top university with a high ranking, which, due to its founding history, plays a leading role in the fields of medicine, health sciences and international politics. She holds the world's third most-cited research institutions and in university rankings done regularly among the 20 best universities in the world. Although it is not one of the universities of the so-called Ivy League , it is still one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Her Medical School and the Bloomberg School of Public Health are recognized as the world's leading institutions for medicine and public health . The same applies to the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC and Bologna for the field of international politics and economics. The medical faculty clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital , has been number one in the annual hospital ranking of the weekly US News & World Report for about 20 years.

Around 35 - according to the more stringent criteria of the JHU itself, only 25 - people associated with it in some form as alumni or lecturers have so far received a Nobel Prize . These include James Franck and Adam Riess (Nobel Prize for Physics), Joseph Erlanger (Nobel Prize for Medicine), Bernard Lown on behalf of the organization IPPNW ( International Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War ) and Woodrow Wilson (Nobel Peace Prize), Richard Stone and Simon Kuznets ( Nobel Prize for Economics) and JM Coetzee , who was a visiting professor here (Nobel Prize for Literature).

For example, in the 1930s the JHU recognized the principle of defibrillation of the heart by means of electrical surges and in 1950 the development of a defibrillator for use with the chest closed began.

The university is a founding member of the Association of American Universities , a network of leading research-intensive North American universities that has existed since 1900. There are currently 19,019 students enrolled at the university.

The university had the highest spending on research and development of any US university in 2007, at $ 1.554 billion .

In the spring of 2020, the university suffered over one hundred million dollars in losses through April 2020 after shutting down much of campus life, research, and medical interventions in the wake of the pandemic.

Coronavirus Resource Center

After the Johns Hopkins University had already organized the simulation game Event 201 on the worldwide spread of a novel corona virus in October 2019 , the Coronavirus Resource Center of the Johns Hopkins Medicine division published since the first proven Covid-19 case in the United States on January 22, 2020 a world map showing coronavirus infections in 180 countries to provide researchers, government health officials and the public with an easy-to-use tool to follow the outbreak in real time. The figures for Germany come from three different German online media: the Berliner Morgenpost , Zeit Online and the Tagesspiegel , which in turn have this data retrieved from a think tank in a partially automated process directly from the health authorities, ministries and state chancelleries . The state authorities are in the official reporting chain ( § 11 IfSG ) before the Robert Koch Institute and usually provide the numbers of laboratory-confirmed new cases more quickly. Since there is no reporting requirement for recovered persons and deaths , this information is based on estimates.

The statistics of the Coronavirus Resource Center are in turn used by the health authorities of many countries and by the media to illustrate the spread of the COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 .

Accusation of unethical human attempts

In January 2019, a US judge ruled that the university, alongside the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Rockefeller Foundation , will have to answer for trials in which, from the 1940s onwards, uninformed people in Guatemala infected with syphilis or other sexually transmitted diseases had been to test the effectiveness of penicillin. The experiments were discovered in 2010 by Professor Susan Reverby of Wellesley College , who came across notes from John Charles Cutler , an STD specialist who died in 2003. Cutler had temporarily led the test series and carried out the tests with colleagues in Guatemala on soldiers, the mentally ill, prostitutes and convicted criminals.

Surname

Often the name of the university is mistakenly given as John Hopkins , on the assumption that the first name of the namesake was "John". That's wrong - the first name comes from the family name of his great-grandmother, Margaret Johns, who married Gerard Hopkins. The two named their son Johns Hopkins, and the name was passed down to his grandson.
