Henry Newell Martin (born July 1, 1848 in Newry , County Down , † October 27, 1896 in Burley-in-Wharfedale , Yorkshire ) was a British physiologist .

Life

H. Newell Martin studied at the Universities of London and Cambridge . In 1876 he was appointed to the first professorship in physiology at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , which was founded in the same year , where he worked with George Henry Falkiner Nuttall . In 1879 he married Hetty Cary, widow of Confederate General John Pegram . In 1885 he became a member of the Royal Society , in 1890 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . After his wife's death in 1892, Martin left Baltimore in 1893 and returned to Great Britain.

Martin is considered the founder of scientific physiology in the USA . His work on cardiac physiology , which was made possible by his sensational preparations of isolated perfused mammalian hearts , is of particular importance .
