Adam Guy Riess (born December 16, 1969 in Washington, DC ) is an American astrophysicist whose research deals with the use of supernovae as cosmological measures of distance. In 2011 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics .

biography

Riess was born into a Jewish family. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( bachelor's degree in 1992) and received a Ph.D. 1996 at Harvard University with a thesis on type I supernovae, supervised by Robert Kirshner . From 1992 he was at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory . Riess was part of Brian Schmidt's High-Z Supernova Search Team , one of the two groups that used supernovae to prove that the universe was expanding at an accelerated rate in the late 1990s. The other team was the Supernova Cosmology Project by Saul Perlmutter . Riess then went to the University of California, Berkeley as a Miller Fellow in 1996 , and to the Space Telescope Science Institute as Senior Staff Scientist from 1999 to 2005 .

Since 2006 he has been Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University .

With the Hubble space telescope , he pursued a search program for supernovae at an even higher redshift , which extends into the earlier delayed expansion phases of the universe.

He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2008 and the National Academy of Sciences since 2009 . In 2011 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics together with Saul Perlmutter and Brian P. Schmidt . Her discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe by observing distant supernovae was recognized.

His grandfather was the German-Jewish writer Curt Riess (1902–1993) who emigrated to America from Würzburg in 1933 and later lived in Switzerland .
