Donna Strickland (2018)

Donna Theo Strickland (born May 27, 1959 in Guelph , Ontario ) is a Canadian physicist. In 2018 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics together with Gérard Mourou and Arthur Ashkin "for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics" . After Marie Curie and Maria Goeppert-Mayer , she is the third woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics.

biography

Strickland studied from 1977 Physics Engineering at McMaster University with a Bachelor Accounts in 1981 and his doctorate in 1989 at the University of Rochester in physics at Gérard Mourou ( Development of an ultra-bright laser and on application to multi-photon ionization ). As a post-doctoral student , she conducted research for the National Research Council in Canada from 1989 to 1991 , spent a year in the laser department of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and from 1992 at the Advanced Center for Photonics and Optoelectronic Materials at Princeton University . She has been an Assistant Professor since 1997 and an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo since 2002 . After the Nobel Prize became known, she was given a full professorship. Since 2007 she has been the Associate Chair of the Physics Department.

Strickland deals with non-linear optics , the interaction of intense laser light with matter and ultra-short laser pulses . In 1985 she and Gérard Mourou developed the Chirped Pulse Amplification , which allows the generation of ultra-short laser pulses with very high intensity. In her dissertation, Strickland developed this method, the origins of which lie in radar technology in solving a similar problem. It is used, for example, in eye surgery , an area in which Strickland is also active, and in material processing. It is the most common technique for generating high-intensity laser pulses. More recently, she developed a system for generating ultra-short femtosecond laser pulses by exciting Raman modes at many frequencies (multi-frequency Raman generation, MRG), from infrared to ultraviolet. In addition, her group developed a pulsed fiber optic laser system in the field of infrared fingerprints in molecular physics .

Strickland served on the editorial board of Optics & Photonics News , and from 2004 to 2010 section editor for Optics Letters .
