George Elwood Smith

George Elwood Smith (born May 10, 1930 in White Plains ) is an American physicist. He is co-inventor of the Charge-Coupled Device (CCD).

Smith worked at Bell Laboratories from 1959 to 1986 , where he advanced research into novel lasers and semiconductor components.

In 1969, Smith and Willard Boyle invented the charge-coupled device. For this they both received the Franklin Institute Stuart Ballantine Medal in 1973 .

In 2009, together with Willard Boyle, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of the CCD. In 2017 he received the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering .

George E. Smith is a radio amateur and holds the US callsign AA2EJ.
