John Whitridge Williams

John Whitridge Williams (born January 26, 1866 in Baltimore , † October 21, 1931 ibid) was an American gynecologist and obstetrician . He is considered the founder of scientific obstetrics in the USA.

Live and act

Williams was in 1866 in Baltimore ( Maryland born) in a medical family. He studied medicine at Johns Hopkins University , which he graduated in 1886 with a Bachelor of Arts . He received his MD from the University of Maryland in 1888. He then learned bacteriology and pathology at the universities of Berlin and Vienna . In 1889 he returned to Baltimore, where he was assistant to Howard Atwood Kelly at Johns Hopkins Hospital . Another study trip to Europe served to improve his knowledge of obstetrics. He returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1892 and became an obstetrics associate in 1893 . In 1896 he was appointed associate professor and in 1899 as professor successor to Kelly. Williams was dean of the university between 1911 and 1923 . Williams died in 1931 at the age of 65 from complications from an abdominal surgery .

John Whitridge Williams published his book "Obstetrics" (Obstetrics) in 1903 , which is still run today as Williams' Obstetrics and was published in 2009 in its 23rd edition.
