Friedrich Springorum (born April 1, 1858 in Schwelm ; † May 16, 1938 in Dortmund ) was a German engineer and entrepreneur.

Life

Since 1896 a board member , from 1908 general director and sole director of Eisen- und Stahlwerke Hoesch AG in Dortmund , Springorum was the most important salaried company leader in the German steel industry before the First and Second World War . He acted responsibly at eye level with the owner steel entrepreneurs, for example from Krupp and Thyssen . Springorum headed Hoesch until 1921 and was then chairman of the company's supervisory board until 1933 . His son was Fritz Springorum ; he also became chairman of the supervisory board of Hoesch.

From 1904 to 1917 Friedrich Springorum was chairman and from 1917 honorary chairman of the Association of German Ironworkers . In addition, he was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute , a lifelong member of the board of directors of the Helmholtz Society and until 1936 headed the board of trustees of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf. From 1917 to 1937 he was also a member of the Senate of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society .

In 1910 he was at the RWTH Aachen University with a thesis on experimental investigations of Hoesch process doctorate . Springorum was also a co-founder of the Society of Friends and Patrons of RWTH Aachen e. V. (ProRWTH), which has been awarding the Springorum commemorative coin since 1925.

On October 24, 1920, Friedrich Springorum was awarded honorary citizenship of RWTH Aachen University “ in grateful recognition of his tireless work for the creation and promotion of the Society of Friends of Aachen University ”. Furthermore, he was awarded the honorary title of a commercial councilor and an honorary doctorate from the TH Breslau and the University of Leeds .

Since his student days in Aachen, Springorum was a member of the Academic Association of Chemists and Metalworkers , which in 1909 changed to Academic Association Montania and in 1920 to Corps Montania. In addition, he was politically active and belonged to the city council of Dortmund and was a member of the Westphalian provincial parliament and since 1912 of the Prussian mansion .

Since 1925, the ProRWTH association, founded by Springorum, has been awarding the commemorative coin named after Friedrich Springorum, in accordance with the resolution of its general meeting of August 8, 1925, which is awarded to diploma students, masters and magisters of a year who have completed their diploma, their master’s or master’s thesis, their teaching examination or pass her state examination with distinction. This also applies to the top ten percent of the students in a year per faculty, which are determined using the faculty-internal selection process. The Springorum commemorative coin was designed as a bronze medal by Friedrich Bagdons from Dortmund and shows the head of Friedrich Springorum on its obverse. The following is engraved on its circumferential edge: "FRIEDRICH SPRINGORUM A FRIEND AND SUPPORT OF THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF AACHEN". Since 2006, recognition has been given in the form of a badge of honor.
