Hanns Christian Hopf (* 1934 in Hamburg ; † September 13, 2013 in Mainz ) was a German neurologist and university professor .

Live and act

Hopf began his studies in human medicine in Freiburg im Breisgau and completed it in Hamburg in 1959 with a doctorate on C-reactive protein (CRP) in liquor under Helmut Bauer . He spent his time as a medical assistant. a. in the Neurological University Clinic in Bern . In 1961 he became an assistant at Georg Schaltbrand's neurological university clinic in Würzburg . There he completed his habilitation in 1965 with the thesis Acrodermatitis Chronica Atrophicans (Herxheimer) and Nervensystem - an analysis of clinical, physiological, histological and electromyographic findings . In 1966 he summarized his research on the neurological consequences of Borrelia infections in a monograph. In 1969 he became senior physician at the Neurological University Clinic in Göttingen with Helmut Bauer. On January 1, 1976, he was appointed to the chair of neurology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , where he was director of the neurological clinic until his retirement in 2001.

Early on, his research with a focus on neurophysiology took him abroad to leading specialist representatives. Numerous original works and a first textbook on electromyography in German, published together with Albrecht Struppler in 1976, were the result. An EMG atlas was added later, which he published in 1996 together with Reinhard Dengler and Rolf Röder. He also dealt intensively with the investigation of peripheral nerves and discovered a technique for determining the performance spectrum of motor nerves, which has found its way into the literature as "Hopf's Technique". He also did pioneering work in the research of muscle physiology . Another research area was the architecture of the brain stem . In 1964 he published his first paper on the trigeminal reflex in young children in the journal Nature . In the period that followed, numerous publications on the brain stem reflexes were made. Together with Louis Caplan, he published the book Brainstem, Localization and Function in 1992 .

In 1974, Hopf founded the journal Current Neurology together with Albert Bischoff and Hans Schliack . From 1981, later in the editor with Klaus Poeck and Hans Schliack , the multi-volume work Neurology in Practice and Clinic was published .

Hanns Christian Hopf was married to a doctor. The marriage had three children.
