Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers is an EP by Motörhead that was released on November 27, 1980. The EP consists of four tracks that were recorded during the recording for their first album Motörhead in 1977 at Escape Studios in Kent , England, but were previously unreleased. The EP was released by Big Beat Records , a subsidiary of Chiswick Records , where the band was under contract to record the tracks in 1977. The release was not authorized by the band, although they were not against it.

background

All four tracks on the EP were recorded in 1977 during the recording of the band's first album, Motörhead , and were considered outtakes . As such, they were only released late after the song Ace of Spades hit # 4 on the UK album charts in 1980. Despite the band's success at the time, the EP failed to make it into the UK charts. Years later, Ted Carroll , head of Chiswick Records, “ransacked” his label's archives again for a retrospective release of a live recording from the same era called What's Words Worth? to publish.

Lemmy reported on Ted Carroll's publications: "He's a great guy, and if it hadn't been for Ted, there wouldn't be a Motorhead anyway, so Ted has a free hand, he can do whatever he wants with the old catalog."

Recordings

The original ZZ Top version of the song Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers , recorded for their 1973 album Tres Hombres , contains vocal passages that were exchanged between guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill , with the two taking turns. Motörhead's version replicated this arrangement, with bassist Lemmy and guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke swapping passages. This was Clarke's debut as the band's lead singer, and it was also one of the few occasions where a Motörhead song was played with vocals by someone other than Lemmy. Other songs were Step Down , I'm Your Witchdoctor and Emergency .

An earlier version of On Parole was recorded by the band in 1975 for an album for United Artists, which was eventually put on hold. Ex-guitarist Larry Wallis , who wrote the song, released a B-side version of his 1977 single, Police Car, on Stiff Records . The song was one of the mainstays in Motörhead's early setlist , such as What's Words Worth? even though sometime after 1979, when the band's repertoire grew, it was definitely no longer sung. I'm Your Witchdoctor , "a great song" according to Lemmy, is a cover version of the song of the same name by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and was another major track on the band's 1977-78 setlist. Instro , the only original composition on the EP, is a rare instrumental piece by the band that is believed to have never been completed due to insufficient studio time during the 1977 recording from which it was selected.

publication

The vinyl EP was released as a 7-inch press (NS61) and a 12-inch press (SWT61); Both formats were pressed as colored records in black, blue, orange, pink and white vinyl and there was also a 7-inch radio play cover. Together with the B-side of the Motörhead single City Kids , the songs from this EP were released by Big Beat Records in 1988 as bonus tracks on the CD re- edition of the Motörhead album. In 1982 Big Beat Records released a German and a French edition with the additional tracks Vibrator , White Line Fever , City Kids , Keep Us on the Road , Lost Johnny and Motörhead . It was released on the usual black vinyl (A 120 174) and as a picture disc (PD 120 174).
