Orgasmatron is the seventh studio album by the British heavy metal band Motörhead . It is the first studio album after the end of a legal dispute with Bronze Records and also the first album by the band as a quartet with two instead of one guitarist .

backgrounds

In late 1985, the dispute with Motorhead's former record label Bronze Records was settled, whereupon the band manager Douglas Smith signed the band with his own label GWR Records . The album was recorded in early 1986 within eleven days, produced by the American Bill Laswell . For the final mix , Laswell took the master tapes to New York City , but Lemmy Kilmister was unsatisfied with the result, so he partly remixed it.

The album initially had the working title Riding With the Driver and was later renamed Orgasmatron . According to information from Kilmister he did not know that Orgasmatron the name of an apparatus in the film The Sleeper by Woody Allen is. Kilmister, who was collecting train models at the time, wanted a train motif on the record cover , which the artist Joe Petagno implemented. Based on this artwork , Motörhead had a mobile stage system designed for the album tour , which looked like a train but never fully worked. The back cover also contains a photo of Lars Ulrich ( Metallica ) in an embarrassing situation for him.

The distribution of the album did not work out as the band imagined. Therefore the sales figures fell short of the expectations of the musicians and the record label. Nonetheless, Orgasmatron is seen as the band's classic. The US tour began with Megadeth in the opening act and also did not meet expectations in terms of audience numbers. In late 1986 the band played in the Peel Sessions .

Reviews

Steve Huey of Allmusic notes that although Bill Laswell's production works well in parts, it suppresses the raw energy of the band in part and lacks the "bite" of previous releases. The songwriting is inconsistent and the album is very changeable, although Motörhead fans could discover one or the other good song. Holger Stratmann from the music magazine Rock Hard writes that he couldn't get anything out of the album at first, "but after listening to it several times," Orgasmatron "is really fun". For him, the album does not offer any weak points despite the monotony typical of the band. Rich Stim of the music magazine Spin describes Orgasmatron as a "terrifyingly beautiful album" that is still Motörhead and gives the feeling of being " laying your head in the fast lane of the interstate ".

Others

As a curious side note, it should be noted that the name "Orgasmatron" was used in 2003 for a device developed by the American doctor Stuart Meloy, which was supposed to trigger sexual stimulation by means of electrodes on the spine of women. In various newspaper reports, e.g. B. in the taz of November 28, 2003 it was stated that the name was inspired by the Motörhead album. In fact, the name comes from the movie " The Sleeper " (1973) by Woody Allen .
