Rock 'n' Roll is the eighth studio album by the British heavy metal band Motörhead . It is the last studio album for GWR Records and also the first with drummer Phil Taylor after his re-entry into the band.

backgrounds

After Lemmy Kilmister fired drummer Pete Gill , the band gave his predecessor Phil Taylor the job on drums back. With this line-up, the recordings of rock 'n' roll began in June 1987 . Motörhead hired Guy Bidmead as the producer , who was involved in the studio recordings for No Remorse as a sound engineer . The band was not satisfied with his work, which is why they largely took over the production of the album themselves. There were also relationship problems of guitarist Würzel , in the course of which his girlfriend at the time disrupted the studio recordings by fighting the disputes in the recording studio . Some of the recordings took place in Redwood Studio in London , of which Michael Palin of Monty Python was a partner . At Motörhead's request, Palin appeared in the studio dressed like a 1940s cricketer and recorded a sermon based on a scene from Monty Python's film The Purpose of Life . It can be heard as the intro of The Wolf (unofficial name Blessing ). The piece Eat the Rich was part of the soundtrack of the film of the same name , in which Lemmy Kilmister plays a supporting role.

Although the commercial success of the album once again fell short of expectations, in the opinion of Lemmy Kilmister it is not a bad album and contains very good pieces with Dogs , Boogeyman and Traitor , which the band also included in their live program. However, he complained about the time pressure under which the record was recorded. So at the end of the recording sessions he had to sing in his vocal part despite having a bad cold, which in his opinion is clearly audible in the recordings. For Promotion of Rock 'n' Roll hosted MTV Europe an International Day Lemmy . The tour for the album in Europe began in the fall of 1987, and the planned appearances in the USA with Alice Cooper began in 1988 with a one-month delay because the US authorities took so long to issue work permits for the musicians.

Reviews

Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic sees the album's tunes more rooted in traditional rock 'n' roll by Chuck Berry than in heavy metal by Black Sabbath . The songwriting is uninspired for a band and the title song and Eat the Rich are the only really good pieces on the album. Michael Rensen from Rock Hard magazine, on the other hand, describes Rock 'n' Roll as the best Motörhead album since Ace of Spades , although Blackheart and Boogeyman sound "quite unspectacular", the remaining tracks "[blow] you against the nearest wall".
