Hemmeres (formerly also called Hemmers ) is a district of the municipality of Winterspelt , located directly on the Our , the border river between Germany and Belgium. It is located in the far west of Rhineland-Palatinate in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm . The town's landmark is a broad-gabled house from the 18th century.
The settlement in the Ourtal, which was probably established in the Middle Ages, had three houses in 1777 and seven around 1840.
With the cession of some areas in the Eifel to Belgium in 1920 as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, the River Our became the state border between Germany and Belgium. Since the route of the Vennbahn also became Belgian territory, the part of the village located between the railway line and the Our formed a German exclave from 1920 . On April 1, 1949, this area came under Belgian administration as a so-called Belgian annexation area and was only returned to Germany on August 28, 1958.
In the Hemmeres area, the Vennbahn , which is now closed, ran for a length of 1134 m on the east side of the Our. The infrastructure of the Vennbahn was severely damaged in World War II, including when the Ourtal Viaduct north of Hemmeres was blown up by German troops on September 27, 1944. When the town was re-incorporated to Germany in 1958, the railway line in the Hemmeres area also came back to the Federal Republic.
