Location of the local community Schwirzheim in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm | ||
Schwirzheim is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Prüm .
geography
Schwirzheim is in the north of the Prüm Kalkmulde . The community also includes the residential areas Haus Bockelter, Eichelhof, Eichhof, Jagdhaus and Waldhof, as well as part of the Schwirzheim-Gondelsheim settlement.
history
In the east of Schwirzheim the remains of a Roman villa rustica have been excavated, the earliest dating of which points to the 2nd century. The ending “-heim” and the discovery of Franconian graves indicate that the place was created during the time of the Franconian conquest . The place was first mentioned in documents as villa suerdesheim in 943, the ruins of Hartelstein Castle from the 10th century are located near the place , of which only a few remains of the wall have survived. Presumably it was abandoned after it was sold to the Prüm Abbey in 1712 and fell into disrepair. Under French administration, Schwirzheim belonged to the canton of Prüm in the Saardepartement , under Prussia to the mayor's office in Büdesheim in the district of Prüm . During this time, ore mining and lime extraction began in the district. Today Schwirzheim is largely characterized by agriculture, but is also increasingly becoming a residential community for commuters .
