Georg von Schönenberg , often also Schönenburg (* 1530 at Hartelstein Castle near Schwirzheim ; † August 11, 1595 in Speyer ) was Prince-Bishop of Worms from 1580 to 1595 .

Live and act

He was the son of the landed nobleman Johann Joachim von Schönenberg, bailiff of Kyllburg and Schönecken and his wife Elisabeth Weiher zu Nickenich , who lived at Hartelstein Castle in the Eifel. The father's grave slab is preserved in the Kyllburg collegiate church .

Georg von Schönenberg studied in Heidelberg in 1543 and in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1546 . He became canon in Mainz in 1553 and was promoted to cathedral dean and provost of Liebfrauen in 1564 . Since 1557 Schönenberg also officiated as provost of the cathedral in Worms .

On August 22, 1580, he was elected Bishop of Worms, and in 1582 also Provost of Mainz Cathedral, after he had resigned as cathedral dean and had received a successor in this regard in Johann Theobald von Stadion († 1585). He received the episcopal ordination on April 2, 1583 by auxiliary bishop Stephan Weber (1539-1622) of Mainz, in the local church of St. Gangolph .

Bishop Georg resolutely represented the positions of the Catholic Church and was therefore in constant disputes with the Protestant estates of the Electoral Palatinate and the city of Worms. He therefore mainly resided outside the city, in his country palace in Dirmstein . In 1594 the bishop wrote a complaint to the Regensburg Reichstag on this matter; one of the main complaints was the continuing occupation of the Worms Cyriakus pen by the Palatinate Elector. The pastor drew many clerics into his diocese who had received their training at the renowned Collegium Germanicum in Rome. Georg Seiblin († 1591) acted as his chancellor and envoy.

Georg von Schönenberg died surprisingly on August 11, 1595 in Speyer, where he was staying as the representative of Emperor Rudolf II for the Reichsdeputationstag announced there. His body was solemnly transferred to Worms Cathedral and buried on August 15 in the St. George's Chapel there, in front of the altar of the same name. Georg von Schönenberg had this altar built in 1590 in memory of his brother, the Worms cathedral dean Wilhelm von Schönenburg († 1571), consecrated it himself and had it decorated with two inscriptions. A magnificent monument was also erected in Mainz Cathedral to the Bishop of Worms and the Provost of the Cathedral there.

Schönenberg is numismatically significant because, during his reign as Prince-Bishop of Worms , he had many different coins minted in his coin zu Neuleiningen .

In 1588 he was also the godfather of the later Mainz diocesan historian Georg Helwich (1588–1632) from Osthofen , whose father served as the Mainz cathedral provost .

Georg Schönenberg's older brother Johann von Schönenberg was Archbishop and Elector of Trier from 1581 to 1599 .

His nephew (son of his sister Anna), Philipp II. Kratz von Scharfenstein , Provost of Mainz and elected Bishop of Worms, died on July 13, 1604, in Mainz, before he took office. His heart was buried at the uncle's grave, in front of the George Altar in Worms Cathedral, his body in Mainz Cathedral.
