Johann Theobald von Stadion (* in the 16th century; † June 12, 1585 in Mainz ) was a German nobleman and cathedral dean in Mainz.

Origin and family

He came from the Alsatian line of the Swabian noble family von Stadion and was born the son of Johann Ulrich von Stadion and his wife Apollonia von Nankenreuth . The father's uncle Christoph von Stadion (1478–1543) ruled as Prince-Bishop of Augsburg. Johann Theobald's youngest brother, Johann Caspar von Stadion (1567–1641), served as the 45th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order . Both great-nephews were Franz Kaspar von Stadion (1637–1704), Prince-Bishop of Lavant .

Live and act

Johann Theobald von Stadion entered the clergy. Due to the resignation of his uncle Johann Conrad von Stadion († 1565), he became canon in Augsburg in 1560 , and in the same year also in Mainz, where the family was not yet represented and largely unknown. In Mainz, the stadium also became the Capitular to St. Viktor and St. Maria ad Gradus .

In 1571 the nobleman was promoted to cathedral capitular of Basel , and in 1580 he took over the office of cathedral cantor there . At that time, the Basel Chapter stayed permanently in Freiburg im Breisgau, in front of Austria .

Georg von Schönenberg , bishop of Worms since 1580 , resigned from his office as dean of Mainz cathedral in 1582, whereupon the chapter chose Johann Theobald von Stadion as his successor.

The stadium only had a short term of three years. He died unexpectedly in Mainz in 1585 and was buried in the east choir of the Mainz Cathedral . The Würzburg prince-bishop Julius Echter , who also belonged to the Mainz cathedral chapter , regretted the death of the stadium in a letter and wrote that he "had stood for his prelature and over time was able to do more with the monastery."
