Anton Philipp Brück

Anton Philipp Brück (born April 16, 1913 in Bingen am Rhein ; † December 15, 1984 ) was a German priest and university professor .

Life

After leaving school in Bingen and studying theology at the Mainz seminary Anton Bruck received in the January 6, 1937 Mainz the priesthood . Then he worked in church pastoral care. After a while he was released to study. He first went to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main as a student . Here he completed his history studies with a doctorate . His doctoral supervisor was Paul Kirn and his doctoral thesis was the Archbishop of Mainz and Elector Johann von Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein . During his studies he was supported by the Mainz Bishop Albert Stohr . In November 1944 he became scientific director of the library of the seminary, today's Martinus library , and head of the cathedral and diocesan archives. In the post-war period he received his doctorate in church history under Ludwig Lenhart at the newly founded Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . The doctoral topic was the Archbishopric Mainz and the Tridentinum . In 1947, Brück was the first doctoral candidate in the Catholic theological faculty of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

In 1947, Brück was one of the founders of the Society for Church History in the Middle Rhine Region . In 1951 he was finally with a postdoctoral thesis on the theology faculty of the old University of Mainz in the 18th century habilitation . He then taught as a private lecturer at the Catholic theological faculty of Johannes Gutenberg University. In 1955 he was finally given a chair as a full professor of church history . Brück now dealt with both medium and more recent church history. Other areas of research were the academic and intellectual history , the Rheinhessen and Mainz history and religious history . In addition, he was also active as a publisher. For example, for the 1000th anniversary of Mainz Cathedral in 1975 and for the anniversary of Hildegard von Bingen in 1979, he edited important commemorative publications that are now considered standard works of German cultural, church and intellectual history. In 1978 he was at the age of 65 years emeritus . In honor of and in recognition of Anton Philipp Brück's work, he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Bingen am Rhein.

Anton Philipp Brück was a cousin of Stefan George and a relative of the Mainz church historian and bishop Heinrich Brück .

His students include Friedhelm Jürgensmeier , Rolf Decot and Helmut Hinkel , the director of the Martinus Library in Mainz .

The philosophy historian Kurt Flasch describes Brück as his "foster father". He said of the prelate : "A wonderful man from Bingen am Rhein, who taught me to drink wine."
