Salmann Cleman (* shortly before 1299; † before May 15, 1359 ) was Bishop of Worms from 1329 to 1359 .

Life

Salmann comes from a patrician family in Mainz, his father Johann Cleman was mayor in Mainz . The family named itself after the “Hof zum Cleman”, later “Gasthaus zu den drei Kronen”, then the main post office.

In 1316 he was custodian of the St. Peter monastery in Mainz and before 1324 was provost of the St. Stephan collegiate monastery in Mainz. In 1326 he became a canon in Worms , the claim to a canonical in Mainz could not be enforced against the resistance of the Mainz cathedral chapter . Pope John XXII. Salmann appointed Bishop of Worms in 1329, while the cathedral chapter elected Gerlach Schenk von Erbach as bishop. The schism in the diocese continued after Gerlach's death in 1332. In 1335 the cathedral chapter asked Archbishop Baldwin of Trier to take over the administration of the diocese together with two other capitulars. In 1337 Baldwin returned the administration to the Pope's legate. After an arbitration decision by Emperor Ludwig, the cathedral chapter was ready to recognize Salmann as bishop under the threat of interdict and imperial ban. The disputes over the occupation of the bishopric brought the spiritual life almost to a standstill and damaged the finances of the diocese. The conflicts in the city continued even among Salmann's successors. In 1349 the citizens incited by flagellants attacked the Worms Jewish quarter . Over 400 Jews fell victim to the pogrom. On April 16, 1359, Dietrich Bayer von Boppard was appointed coadjutor of Salmann, who was no longer able to exercise his office due to his age and health. He resigned shortly after and passed away soon after. Dietrich was appointed bishop on May 15th.
