He entered the clergy, has appeared as a canon in Mainz since 1279 and as the cathedral scholaster there from 1284 . In 1280 he was provost of Dorla and in 1289 at the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt . From 1289 Emmerich von Schöneck also held the dignity of papal chaplain, in 1299 he became court chaplain to King Albrecht I.

After the death of Worms Bishop Eberwin I von Kronberg († 1303) there were disputes in the cathedral chapter and a controversial bishop election, which is why Pope Benedict XI. Named 1304 as his own candidate for the vacant Worms chair. The pontiff died soon after.

After the death of Archbishop of Mainz Gerhard II von Eppstein († February 25, 1305), part of the Mainz cathedral chapter chose Emmerich von Schöneck as their successor. The other canons opted for the cleric Emich von Sponheim. Both opponents now sought recognition from Pope Clement V. However, this did not confirm either of the two, but at the beginning of November 1306 appointed the Basel Bishop Peter von Aspelt as the new Archbishop of Mainz.

Thereupon Clemens V appointed, the will of his predecessor Benedict XI. taking up, Emmerich von Schöneck on September 16, 1307 as Bishop of Worms. Soon afterwards he received episcopal ordination. He is said to have ruled with great care and always tried to live in harmony with the city. In 1316 he held a diocesan synod to enhance religious life. After his death, he was buried in 1318 in the eastern part of Worms Cathedral , in front of the sacrament altar. The historians Friedrich Zorn (1538–1610) and Johann Friedrich Schannat († 1739) pass on his grave inscription.
