Eberwin I. von Kronberg also Eberwein von Kronberg († April 19, 1303 ) was bishop of Worms from 1299 to 1303 .

Origin and family

He came from the noble family of the Knights of Kronberg, which died out in 1704 and was based in the castle of the same name in the Taunus . His father was Hartmut III. von Kronberg, founder of the so-called crown tribe of the multi-branched family.

Live and act

Eberwin entered the clergy and had been a cathedral canon in Mainz since 1294 ; an uncle of the same name († 1284) had worked here as a cathedral scholaster and cathedral canon. 1299, at the death of Worms bishop Raugraf Emich I , he sat in the Worms cathedral chapter and also held the office of provost of Jechaburg monastery in Thuringia .

In autumn 1299 Eberwin von Kronberg was elected bishop of Worms. However, the election was ambivalent and a larger number of votes also fell on the nephew of the predecessor, the provost and later bishop Heinrich von Daun († 1319). The Archbishop of Mainz, Gerhard II von Eppstein , set up a commission of inquiry and recognized Eberwin's election on December 21, 1299 as valid.

In the dispute between town patriziers and the citizens or guilds, Eberwin continued the policy of his predecessor and supported the citizens. But since he also emphasized his own rights more and more, there were repeated unrest and on April 6, 1300 he had to hire Count Friedrich I of Leiningen with his fighters for his protection. Relations with the city of Worms remained tense throughout his episcopate.

1299 donated the couple Jacob and Lieba Engelmann to be buried there on the condition in Worms-Hochheim the nunnery Liebenau . Eberwin von Kronberg laid the foundation stone for this in 1300 and also took care of the completion after the death of the founder.

According to the Worms Chronicle , in 1300 Kronberg celebrated the jubilee year ordered by Pope Boniface VIII .

The bishop died in the spring of 1303 and, according to Friedrich Zorn (1538–1610) and Johann Friedrich Schannat († 1739), was buried in the east choir of Worms Cathedral , "in front of the lectern" , but to the left of his predecessor Emich I. He was not succeeded until 1307, after several years of vacancy, by Emmerich von Schöneck († 1318).
