Antiquorum habet fida relatio ( English : a credible report from the ancients ) is the name of a papal bull ; With this Apostolic Letter , Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed a Jubilee (Holy Year) on February 22, 1300 .

history

Boniface VIII had observed with great interest the pilgrims who had gathered in Rome in 1299 at the turn of the century . From this he developed the idea of proclaiming a special year for Christianity . In his writing he went back to the Old Testament . According to the Book of Leviticus 25: 8–13 EU, Old Testament Judaism knew the "Jubilee year" after seven times seven years. At that time the Pope determined that "from now on there should be a year of jubilee every 100 years for Christianity, a year of reconciliation with God and all people, a year that should be called the year of grace."

With this bull he called for the year 1300 the "year of humility and conversion". It was determined that this year would be associated with a complete indulgence . The prerequisite for this is a visit to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome , the reception of the sacrament of penance and participation in the Eucharistic celebration . With this alignment of a jubilee year, Boniface VIII also pursued a political and economic purpose which, in his opinion, should ultimately contribute to the consolidation of the faith.
