Henry III. from Daun
Henry III. von Daun-Oberstein or Heinrich de Duno († June 8, 1319 ) was Bishop of Worms from 1318 to 1319 .
Origin and family
He came from the Daun-Oberstein branch of the von Daun family with their ancestral castle Oberstein near today's city of Idar-Oberstein . The former Bishop of Worms Richard von Daun († 1257) was his great-uncle.
Henry III. was born the son of Wirich II von Daun and his wife Raugräfin Kunigunde. She and her brother, the Bishop of Worms Emich I († 1299), were children of Raugraf Heinrich I , whose life was overshadowed by great tragedy because of innocent involvement in a princely jealousy drama with fatal outcome.
Live and act
Heinrich entered the clergy. After the bishop appointed his uncle Emich he advanced to 1294 for the provost of St. Paul in Worms , soon to Wormser provost . He became a close confidante of the uncle and was involved with him in the establishment and financial endowment of the Liebfrauenstift . He is considered its co-founder and became its first provost .
The uncle Emich I died on July 24th, 1299. After his death, there was an ambivalent Worms bishop election in the autumn of that year. They chose Eberwin of Kronberg , however, Henry received a greater number of down votes. The Archbishop of Mainz, Gerhard II von Eppstein , set up a commission of inquiry and recognized Eberwin's election on December 21, 1299 as valid. In the same year Heinrich von Daun became provost of Wimpfen . After Kronberg's death in 1303, the diocese remained temporarily vacant and from 1307 to 1318 Bishop Emmerich von Schöneck ruled .
When he died in February 1318, the cathedral chapter unanimously elected Heinrich von Daun as his successor on March 31, which the Archbishop of Mainz, Peter von Aspelt , confimed on June 5 of that year.
The bishop had only a short reign. On June 17th he confirmed - in the uncle's favor - all rights and freedoms of the citizens of Worms. Henry III. von Daun-Oberstein died on June 8, 1319 and was buried in the eastern part of the Worms Cathedral , "in the side choir in front of the Martin's altar" .
