Schöneck Castle

The Schöneck Castle stands on a rock in the Ehrbachklamm in the urban area of Boppard ( district Herschwiesen ) in the Hunsrück .

history

Schöneck was built as a Reichsburg around 1200 by the Reich Ministerial Konrad von Boppard . His descendants called themselves Ritter von Schöneck and lived in the castle until it died out in 1508. The family consisted of several lines that lived together at the castle ( Ganerbeburg ). The Gallscheid court was also administered from Schöneck .

In the Eltz feud from 1331-1336, the castle was part of the alliance of protection and defense against the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg . The castle came to Kurtrier as a fief in 1354 .

In 1488 Schöneck was occupied by Palatine troops in the so-called Beilstein War and returned to Kurtrier a short time later.

From 1508 the castle changed hands several times, but remained a Trier feudal castle. Between 1560 and 1646 Schöneck was in pledge possession of a branch line of the Lords of Eltz . Between 1646 and around 1677 Schöneck belonged to the so-called Soeternschen Fideikommiss , a foundation for the administration of the possessions of the noble von Sötern family. Archbishop Philipp Christoph von Sötern of Trier was the mastermind behind the title . Schöneck was named Schloss Schöneck after baroque extensions in the middle of the 17th century.

In 1805 the plant came into private hands. In the period that followed, some new buildings were built. Between 1846 and 1848 a whey spa was temporarily operated there.

In 1912 the painter Wilhelm Steinhausen acquired the facility. It has been owned by a family foundation since 1922.

description
