The electric railways of the city of Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg-Kreises GmbH (SSB) are a municipal rail transport company of the SWB Bus und Bahn (city of Bonn ) and the surrounding Rhein-Sieg-Kreis , each of which has a half share in the company. The abbreviation SSB is derived from the short version of the Siegburger und Siebengebirgsbahn , the two lines of the SSB from Bonn to the Rhein-Sieg district on the right bank of the Rhine (part of the Bonn light rail network ).

history

Since the end of the 1880s there have been plans to connect the Siebengebirge cog railways to Beuel and the city of Bonn by public transport . When the Rheinuferbahn of the Cologne-Bonn Railways went into operation in 1906 , the district administrator of the Siegkreis decided to build a railway based on this model. The conventional design prevailed against proposals such as a suspension railway or trackless railway .

On May 13, 1909, together with the city of Bonn, the electric railways of the districts of Bonn-Stadt, Bonn-Land and the Sieg district were founded, which bore this name until the municipal reform in 1969. The company received the concession to build and operate a small electric railway ( Siegburger Bahn ) between Bonn and Siegburg on September 18, 1910 for a period of 100 years. The opening of the Siegburger Bahn took place on September 5, 1911.

A little later, the SSB also received the concession to build the second small electric railway, the Siebengebirgsbahn. The first section from Beuel to Königswinter was opened after a number of difficulties on March 18, 1913, the further section to Bad Honnef followed on September 27, 1925.

At times, the SSB, in cooperation with the KBE , offered non -stop tickets from Cologne to the Siebengebirge. The Siebengebirgsbahn in particular benefited from this in times of growing competition from car traffic.

During the Second World War , the railway suffered considerable damage. Among other things, the bridges over the Rhine and the Sieg were blown up by the German troops. The reconstruction of the bridge over the Sieg was only finished in December 1946 and the bridge over the Rhine on November 12, 1949.

In 1960 the two routes were re-licensed to tram to reduce costs.

The single-track line of the Siebengebirgsbahn between Königswinter and Bad Honnef has only been secured with signals since June 1994, previously it was operated with staff security .

From 1998 the Siegburg train station was completely rebuilt due to the construction of the new ICE line . The route of the Siegburger Bahn was changed, a new terminus was built below the train station and the Siegburg-Zange stop was abandoned.

As part of the overall project for the reconstruction and acceleration of line 66 between Bonn Hauptbahnhof and Siegburg Bahnhof , the catenary in Beuel was renewed in the mid-2000s and most of the stops were rebuilt to be barrier-free . As part of the renovation and widening of the Kennedy Bridge at the end of August 2010, the Stadtbahn was given its own track structure, which makes it independent of individual traffic.

The entire light rail network is equipped with a dynamic passenger information system.

There is traditionally a close cooperation between SSB and SWB Bus und Bahn. Since 2004, the operational management of SSB has been officially with SWB Bus und Bahn . Today, the SSB no longer has its own staff; these are provided by the SWB. The management is made up of employees from the Bonn municipal utilities and the Rhein-Sieg district. However, the SSB still owns the concessions for the two light rail lines, owns the vehicles and the infrastructure (track systems, stops). In addition, the operating deficit is processed by SSB to 50% each on Stadtwerke Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district, the two owners.

On January 1, 2014, the company was converted from an oHG into a GmbH and at the same time the stake held by Stadtwerke Bonn was increased to 50.1%.
