Karl Anton Schaab (born September 5, 1761 in Mainz ; † March 12, 1855 ibid) was a grand ducal Hessian district judge, justice of the peace, Mainz historian and local writer who published mainly on Mainz.

Life

Schaab, who had completed a degree in law in Mainz and Göttingen, was court counsel under Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal on April 26, 1786 after completing his doctorate . Later, as a judge- martial , he became an assessor at a court-martial in the Electorate of Mainz regiment of Gymnich , and remained in this position until the fall of the Electorate of Mainz and December 30, 1797 when the Austrian troops left Mainz and "Mayence" became French for the fourth time. As early as 1798, the French began with their government commissioners like François Joseph Rudler to reorganize the administration in the newly conquered areas in their own way and to separate state and church, justice and administration. In the same year Schaab was entrusted with the still young office of justice of the peace, which had been established in France as a legal institution since 1790 in order to increase the effectiveness of jurisprudence. In 1803 he finally became a security officer of the Canton of Mainz (Magistrat de Sureté de l'arrondisemont Mayence) and substitute for the General Procurator . After this position was closed, he became a substitute for the state procurator in 1811.

Finally, Schaab was appointed judge in the district court during the Central Rhine General Government in 1815. On November 14, 1832 he was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Ludwig. Shortly before his retirement on November 30, 1838, on June 3, 1838 he was still Vice-President of the Court Martial.

Journalistic activity

As an autodidact, he has presented publications since 1820 that dealt primarily with the history of printing , the history of the Mainz fortress , and the history of the city of Mainz , the history of the great Rhenish city union , and the diplomatic history of the Jews in Mainz.

Karl Anton Schaab was a co-founder of the Mainz Antiquities Association: his estate is in the Mainz city archive, his grave is in the Mainz main cemetery . He was a member of the Mainz Masonic lodge "The Friends of Unity":
