Walpode

Walpode or Walpod is a historical official designation that is particularly widespread in the Rhineland .

Walpode is interpreted as a messenger of violence (in the sense of an authorized power holder, for example a ministerial ), which means that the messenger also had police force . Above all, walpods took on judicial functions.

A well-known name bearer is the founder of the Rhenish Association of Cities from 1254, the Mainz citizen Arnold Walpod.

An early example of being appointed Walpot is Hartwig I of Bavaria from the Aribonen family , he was appointed Walpot for Carantania (Carinthia) by King Otto I around 952.

The wisdom of Oberursel 1401 illustrates the use in the sense of a power of rule.

The Rheingau region can serve as an example , where the existence of the lordly office is historically documented since 1131. In the 17th century , police matters - including overseeing immigration regulations - and the execution of sentences were part of a whale pod's remit.

Like other official titles (example: Truchsessen von Waldburg ), Walpode also became part of noble family names. In a family tree register it is found that especially noble families from the Middle Rhine region in the Rheingau and in the greater Koblenz area took up the designation: Walpode von Andernach, Bassenheim, Braubach etc.

The most famous family today has a slightly different name: the still flourishing Count Waldbott von Bassenheim from Bassenheim near Koblenz (originally Walpot von Waldmannshausen , from around 1300 von Bassenheim, raised to Imperial Count in 1720 ).
