The Lobdengau Museum is located in Ladenburg , Rhein-Neckar-Kreis , in the former bishop's court (castle) of the Worms prince-bishops . It presents the archeology, urban history and folk culture of the Lobdengau .

museum

The museum is divided into the archeology, city history and folk culture departments. Exhibits from the Neolithic to modern times are presented on four floors . One focus is the Roman collection in the basement with finds from the Roman Ladenburg ( Lopodunum ). The further history of Ladenburg can be followed on the floors above. The city was the seat of the Worms bishops and later the seat of the upper office in the Electoral Palatinate . On the top floor there is a collection of painted rustic furniture from the Odenwald. The Lobdengau Museum is complemented by an open-air museum in the episcopal courtyard.

history

In 1903 the Stichs'sche Haus was bought, a Renaissance house opposite the St. Gallus Church , and the following year the “municipal antiquities collection” was housed there, which was looked after by Ernst Wagner , a conservator from Baden . In 1909 the local history museum was officially opened by Grand Duke Friedrich II of Baden . After it had to close in World War II, it was reopened in 1950 under the direction of Berndmark Heukemes . Many finds expanded the collection over time, so that in 1968 the Lobdengau Museum was opened in the former bishop's court.

building

The building in which the museum is located was formerly the bishop's court of the bishops of Worms . The oldest parts of the structure, including a biforium on the west side, which was also part of the city wall, date from before the 13th century. The building received its current appearance mainly during the Renaissance . The building was extended to the north and received a slate roof. The north bay was added in 1590, the characteristic octagonal stair tower with a Welsch dome followed in 1610 and the southern bay annex around 1620. During restoration work in the 1970s, remnants of the Mannerist painting were found and then the facade was reconstructed, on which there are several coats of arms of the Worms bishops.
