Franz Werner (born October 21, 1761 in Mainz ; † 1845 ibid) was a Mainz cathedral chapter who mainly published on the history of Mainz .

Life

Franz Werner received his education in what was then the improved grammar school and then studied at the University of Mainz, which was reformed by Elector Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal . There he heard public law , imperial history and canon law until 1789 . At the end of 1789 he went to Rome . Here he did his theological studies in the German college , received his theological doctorate and, after his return from Elector Friedrich Karl, a canon in the collegiate monastery of St. Stephan in Mainz.

After the abolition of all spiritual foundations in 1802, he was appointed by Bishop Joseph Ludwig Colmar to the clerical council in October of the same year and, after the diocese had been organized in 1803, to the cathedral chapter . Cathedral dean Werner helped to save the Mainz Cathedral , which was badly damaged in the French Revolutionary Wars, from demolition and rebuilt it as diocese administrator.

Based on the work of the Benedictine Father Joseph Fuchs from Seligenstadt , he made a contribution to antiquity research in Mainz. His main work is the publication The Cathedral of Mainz and its monuments. In addition to the presentation of the fate of the city and the history of its archbishops up to the translation of the archbishopric to Regensburg (Mainz 1827–36, 3 volumes).

After the death of the Mainz bishop Johann Jakob Humann in 1834, he was proposed for election as bishop of Mainz , but turned it down in favor of Peter Leopold Kaiser .

In 1780, his father bought a winery from Count York in Hochheim am Main , which is now called Domdechant Werner´sches Weingut .
