Werdo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werdo (* before 778; † March 30, 812 ) was abbot of the St. Gallen Monastery in St. Gallen .

The world priest Werdo was first mentioned in a document in 778. After Waldo von Reichenau's resignation in 784, he was appointed abbot of the St. Gallen monastery by Bishop Egino von Konstanz from the diocese of Konstanz . He probably died on March 30, 812.

Act

Werdo was only accepted by the St. Gallen monks when he confessed to monastic life and put on the habit . He was also heavily dependent on Bishop Egino throughout his reign. He often appears in documents in connection with Egino. His monastery management was in the tradition of Abbot John II of Constance , especially with regard to the expansive acquisition policy. The monastery acquired numerous goods in the Danube - Neckar area under his leadership . Under him, the first advocates appeared in St. Gallen who supported the abbot or his representative in holding courts and in legal transactions.
