Egino of Constance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Egino of Constance , also Agino , (* around 760 ; † August 25, 811 in Constance ) was Bishop of Constance from 782 to 811 .

Egino probably took office on February 9, 782 after the death of his predecessor Johannes . Egino was first mentioned in a document on May 3, 786. Egino probably came from an Alemannic aristocratic family (Bertholde / Alaholfinger ).

Unlike his predecessors, Egino ("Agino episcopus") was not abbot of the Reichenau Abbey and St. Gallen Abbey at the same time, but as bishop he was in charge of the St. Gallen Abbey and was its rector .

Between Bishop Egino and Waldo , then a monk in St. Gallen, there were disputes over the powers of the monastery supervision; even Charlemagne was turned on. Waldo was then abbot of Reichenau and Werdo abbot of the St. Gallen monastery.

Egino donated the so-called Egino Cross to the Constance Minster and endeavored to expand the library.
