Johannes Duft (born February 14, 1915 in St. Gallen-St . Georgen; † June 20, 2003 in St. Gallen, from Kaltbrunn ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic theologian. From 1948 to 1981 he was the abbey librarian in the Abbey Library in St. Gallen .

Life

Johannes Duft completed his theology studies at the University of Freiburg i. Ü. In 1940 he was ordained a priest in St. Gallen . In 1943 he was due to the dissertation The faith care of the prince abbots of St. Gallen in 17./18. Century. A contribution to the pastoral history of the Catholic Restoration as the prehistory of the diocese of St. Gallen in Freiburg i. Ü. to the Dr. theol. PhD . He then worked as a chaplain in Rorschach until he was appointed to St. Gallen as a monastery librarian in 1948. From 1961 to 1985 he held an honorary professorship for medieval intellectual and educational history at the University of Innsbruck , which in 1974 (like the University of St. Gallen) awarded him an honorary doctorate. For the publication of the book series Bibliotheca Sangallensis he received the Bodensee Literature Prize . In 1970 he was awarded the Culture Prize of the City of St. Gallen . The Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings made him an honorary member in 1974.

Fragrance, one of the most renowned researchers of the history of St. Gallen Abbey with numerous publications on the subject, has made great contributions to opening up the abbey library as a place of science.

Fragrance did not agree with the portrayal of his nephew Thomas Hürlimann , behind whose fictional librarian Jacobus Katz in the novel Fräulein Stark fragrance is easily recognizable. He felt like a victim of a key novel and wrote in the wake a ten-page pamphlet , he called in the Hürlimann inter alia, as "spoiled Lord's boy."
