Arnefrid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arnefrid (lat. Arnefridus ) was from about 736 to about 746 Bishop of Constance and Abbot of the Reichenau Monastery .

Life

According to information from the 11th century, he was a monk in Reichenau monastery before his time as bishop. This is now doubted by various researchers. As a bishop he was then also abbot of Reichenau. Chroniclers mention the years 736 and 731 as the beginning of the office of bishop and abbot, but conclusions about the year of death of a bishop Audoin play a role, who was probably wrongly counted among the Bishops of Constance. In this respect, the beginning of the pontificate must be considered completely open. There are also chronological problems with the Reichenau abbot series.

Arnefrid can only be documented through two deeds of donation from a Beata, in which Arnfrid appears as a witness. However, he is merely dubbed the Abbot. The end of his pontificate was also constructed by later historians. It is unclear whether he died or was deposed in the course of the incorporation of Alemannia into the Franconian Empire .
