François Gabart (born March 23, 1983 in Saint-Michel (Charente) , France ) is a French sailor and professional skipper .

On January 27, 2013 he won the Vendée Globe 2012-2013 with a new record for a non-stop solo circumnavigation as a single-handed sailor in a single-hull sailboat in 78 days, two hours, 16 minutes and 40 seconds. At 29 years of age at the time of the victory, Gabart is also the youngest winner of all Vendée Globe competitions.

In the same year, the French sports daily L'Équipe awarded him a special prize as the best extreme athlete (“Champion des champions de l'extrême”).

On May 10, 2016 François Gabart won the Transat Bakerly, the famous one-handed regatta across the Atlantic from Plymouth (Great Britain) to New York (USA) in eight days, eight hours, 54 minutes and 39 seconds with the 100-foot trimaran MACIF . Gabart missed his mentor Michel Desjoyeaux's record by just a few minutes. In 2004, Desjoyeaux made the trip across the pond in eight days, eight hours and 29 minutes. Back then, however, the goal was not in New York, but in nearby Boston.

On December 17, 2017, he set a new world record for sailing around the earth as a single-handed sailor . The 34-year-old reached the finish line at Brest after 42 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds. Gabart was thus six days and almost ten hours faster than the previous record holder Thomas Coville.
