Eberhard I of Constance
Eberhard I of Konstanz (first mentioned in 1034; † December 25, 1046 ) was Bishop of Konstanz from 1034 to 1046 .
Life
Eberhard's date of birth is unknown. In 1034 he was first mentioned in the Hildesheim annals as the official successor to his brother Warmann von Konstanz . Presumably he and his brother Warmann came from the Swabian noble family of the Counts of Dillingen and were sons of Count Riwin I of Dillingen and his wife Hildegard.
Before he ascended the Bishop's chair in Constance, he belonged to the royal court orchestra of Konrad II and was probably closely related to the Worms bishop's church .
Bishop Eberhard I died on December 25, 1046 in Rome and was buried in St. Peter's Church.
Act
Bishop Eberhard increased the Constance Cathedral library and took care of the administration and jurisdiction in his diocese.
Proximity to King Heinrich III.
Eberhard's special closeness to the king can not only be seen in two visits by King Heinrich III. at the Bishopric of Constance (1040 and 1043), but also because it gave him the Rheinau Imperial Abbey as a fief . The fact that the king used his second visit to Constance (in October 1043) to issue a peace command at the diocesan synod held by Eberhard shows that Heinrich III. was very close to the Bishop of Constance.
Bishop Eberhard accompanied King Heinrich III. When he set out on his first Italian expedition in September 1046. In October he took part in the synod in Pavia called by Heinrich and in December also attended the synod of Sutri . He then traveled on to Rome with the king, presumably wanting to take part in Henry's coronation there, but died a few hours before the coronation ceremony on the morning of December 25, 1046.
Territorial expansion of the diocese
During his tenure, Eberhard succeeded next to that of Heinrich III. transferred to the abbey of Rheinau, the canons of St. Peter Embrach and the chapel on the island of Rötsee near Kißlegg in the Nibelgau region . The church in Rötsee was built in the second half of the 10th century by the monk and hermit Ratpero. After his brother and predecessor Warmann had expelled Ratpero from his hermitage , Eberhard brought Ratpero back to Rötsee, reinstated him in his rights, whereupon he transferred his church to the Constance diocese.
Church consecrations
Bishop Eberhard I. performed numerous church consecrations during his reign . In addition to the chapel in Rötsee, which Ratpero had entrusted to him, he also consecrated the parish church in Heiligenzimmer , around 1034 the Laurentius chapel on Reichenau , built by Count Eberhard von Nellenburg , 1034 the Gangolf chapel in Einsiedeln , 1036 the monastery church of St. Blasien monastery , 1039 the monastery church of Einsiedeln monastery and in 1042 the church in Isny .
