Gerhard von Bevar

Gerhard von Bevar (* before 1280; † August 19, 1318 ) was Bishop of Constance from 1307 to 1318 .

Gerhard comes from the Burgundian family Vergy , which had its seat near Auxerre . His parents were probably Hugo II von Vergy, Herr von Belvoir and Adelheid von Ray.

Gerhard was provost of Bligny , canon in Saulieu , Beaune and Autun, and archdeacon of Avallon . After the death of Bishop Heinrich II von Klingenberg on September 12, 1306, the cathedral chapter could not agree on a candidate, and Ludwig von Strassberg and Rudolf von Hewen were elected twice. The two candidates tried to assert their rights with the Pope. However, Clemens V declared the election invalid and on December 5, 1307 appointed Gerhard von Bevar Bishop of Constance. Gerhard is often attested in the vicinity of Emperor Henry VII . He served him on diplomatic missions and took part in his Italian trains. In the controversy for the throne after Heinrich's death, he was neutral. During his tenure, the city of Constance was increasingly able to free itself from episcopal influence. So it was possible to establish the office of mayor. Gerhard was rarely present in his diocese and left the business to his vicars general . The economic situation of the Hochstift was already marked by heavy indebtedness under its predecessor. The narrow economic base of the small territory as well as the addition from 1307 to the Pope payable servitia led to further debts. Nothing is known of Gerhard's efforts to improve income; rather, pledges and sales of diocesan property increased sharply during his tenure.
