The National Independence Party of Azerbaijan ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan Milli İstiqlal Partiyası ; abbreviation AMİP ) is an economically liberal and center-right oriented, loyal " opposition party " in Azerbaijan . She sees herself as a representative of the interests of the entrepreneurial class and is in favor of a parliamentary instead of the current presidential system.
It was founded in 1992 as a split from the Popular Front and is a member of the International Democratic Union . The Independence Party has a total of around 4,000-5,000 members. The party leader is Etibar Məmmədov .
history
In the last national general elections on November 5, 2000 and January 7, 2001, the National Independence Party won 3.9% of the vote, 2 of the 125 seats in the Azerbaijani National Assembly .
The party candidate for president Etibar Məmmədov won 2.6% of the vote in the Azerbaijani national presidential election on October 15, 2003.
From January 2006 there was a big wave of resignations from the National Independence Party. It split into the officially registered group led by Ayaz Rustamov, which supports the chairman Məmmədov, and the more radical formation under Ali Aliyev, which joined the regrouped opposition bloc "Freedom" with the Azerbaijani Democratic Party .
