The Rathenow station is the station of the Brandenburg district town Rathenow in Havelland . Around 3300 passengers use this station every day.

The station consists of the main building, the forecourt adjoining Dunckerplatz, a no longer used water tower and the former entrance building of the Kaiserbahnhof, which now serves as a tourist information office with a bike rental station. The station also has a platform tunnel through which tracks 3 and 4 of the Brandenburg city railway can be reached, as well as 133 park-and-ride spaces and 80 bicycle parking spaces, 20 of which are covered.

Rathenow station was also the exit station of the narrow-gauge Rathenow-Senzke-Nauen circuit . In the forecourt of the station there are still remnants of the circular railway tracks, which are under monument protection. The station building of the state railway and the facilities of the Brandenburg city railway, including the station building, on the south side of the station are also under monument protection.

history

The station opened in 1870

With the construction of the Berlin-Lehrter Railway , the city of Rathenow also received a train station in 1870. The station building was built from Rathenow bricks.

In 1900 the Rathenow-Senzke-Nauen district railway was opened. With the commissioning of the Brandenburg city railway in 1904, Rathenow developed into a small railway junction. All three railways served separate parts of the station, the narrow-gauge railroad to Nauen departed from the station forecourt and the city railroad had its own city railroad station south of the Lehrter Bahn facilities.

The most important route, however, remained the Lehrter Bahn, over which a large part of the traffic from Berlin went west. The first major redesign of the station forecourt began in 1936.

After the Second World War, traffic on the narrow-gauge railway from Rathenow to Senzke was discontinued and the line on this section was dismantled. The Lehrter Bahn was also dismantled on a track as a reparation payment . With the division of Germany , its importance decreased, the transit traffic from Berlin to the Federal Republic ran on the route via Magdeburg .

Even before the fall of the Wall in the GDR, both German states were planning to build a high-speed line from Hanover to Berlin . After German reunification, the project was promoted as the German Unity Transport Project . The station was completely rebuilt in the mid-1990s. During the renovation phase from 1995 to 1998, the route from Rathenow to Berlin was completely closed, and the trains from Stendal ended at the Rathenow train station during this time. A new, separate, double-track electrified high-speed line was created, the tracks of which were laid in the Rathenow station between the platforms and the station building. A glass extension was added to the station building on the side of the track. The old route was retained on most of the sections and has been used for freight and regional traffic ever since. In both the eastern and western parts of Rathenow station, connecting tracks were built between the high-speed line and the platforms.

The traffic on the section of the Brandenburg city railway between Rathenow Nord and Neustadt (Dosse) was stopped on December 31, 2001, between Rathenow and Rathenow Nord continued until 2003.

From 2003 to 2005 the urban railway line between Rathenow and Brandenburg was completely closed and renovated during this time. In 2005 and 2006, other parts of the station forecourt were renewed and redesigned as part of the state horticultural show .

Investments

The station building of the state railway was built in 1870. It has two floors and twelve axes. The Magdeburg-Halberstadt railway company had it built. To the west of this building, another station building was built in 1913. It is called the Kaiserbahnhof, which is a single-storey wooden building with a gable roof. Around 1900 a water tower, a goods shed and an outbuilding were added.

The station building of the urban railway is a two-story, five-axis massive brick building with a gable roof. The building had a flat extension on the east side. In 1904 it was built by the Brandenburgische Städtebahn AG. In the same year, a goods shed, a water tower and another shed were also built.

The Kleinbahn's listed buildings include an administration building, a shed and track systems. These plants were built in 1899/1900.

passenger traffic

Listed building of the city train station

Up until the Second World War, the Lehrter Bahn was an important long-distance route between Berlin and the west of Rathenow. Some of the express trains also stopped in Rathenow.

After 1945 the importance of the route for passenger traffic decreased significantly, express trains no longer ran here. Up until the Wall was built in 1961, there were passenger trains from Rathenow to Staaken station on the border with West Berlin , where it was possible to change to the S-Bahn . Thereafter, Rathenow could only be reached from East Berlin by changing trains in Wustermark via the Berlin outer ring , direct express trains only ran three times a day between Berlin, Rathenow and Stendal.

After 1990, Rathenow was again an express train stop for trains from Berlin to Amsterdam until the line was closed in 1995 . After the opening of the high-speed line in 1998, the station was served by an interregional line every two hours . Since then, direct regional express trains have run directly to Berlin every hour.

After 2000 the long-distance train stops ceased to exist and were temporarily resumed in 2008 and 2009 when regional trains could not run in the direction of Stendal due to construction work on the bridge over the Havel .

Rathenow Nord train station

Listed station Rathenow Nord

Rathenow Nord station is located on the Brandenburg city railway between Rathenow and Neustadt (Dosse) in the north of the city. Traffic between Rathenow and Neustadt ceased on December 31, 2001. Until 2003, the city railroad trains from Brandenburg (Havel) continued to run beyond Rathenow station to Rathenow Nord, as the city railroad bridge in the direction of Neustadt east of the station was also rebuilt when the high-speed line was expanded. State subsidies were used, which should not be repaid. After the renovation of the urban railway to Brandenburg by 2005, traffic was only resumed as far as Rathenow station and no longer as far as Rathenow Nord. The Rathenow Nord station, "consisting of a reception building, goods shed, paved forecourt and scales" is a listed building.
