The Brandenburg-Altstadt station is a train station in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel . As a formerly important traffic stop, it is located on what is now the Brandenburg – Rathenow railway line of the former Brandenburg city railway . As an important freight station , several side routes lead from it to industrial areas and port facilities in the city. From the first decade to the middle of the 20th century, it was also the terminus of a line on the West Havelland circular railways .

history

The Altstadt station was connected to the German railway network in 1904. The Brandenburgische Städtebahn AG, founded in 1901, opened traffic on the Treuenbrietzen - Belzig - Brandenburg - Rathenow - Neustadt (Dosse) route on March 25, 1904 , the Brandenburg city railroad. The old town station became one of the most important stops of these. It was the city's largest passenger and freight station on this connection. It gained in importance as a transfer station when the Westhavelländische Kreisbahnen was connected only six months after the opening of the urban railway. From the old town train station the line Brandenburg - Brielow - Radewege - Butzow - Ketzür - Weseram - Roskow with a connection to Nauen . The urban railway was connected to the state railway in the Brandenburg Neustadt railway station, which is located directly next to the state railway station and is now part of the Brandenburg railway station .

Freight traffic in the station

The importance of the old town train station increased in the course of advancing industrialization. To the north, the Silo Canal , an important shipping route on the Lower Havel Waterway, was created. In the course of this, important port and industrial facilities such as the Brandenburg steel and rolling mill and the Brandenburg Opel factory were built. Several connecting railways for freight traffic departed from the Altstadt station. For example, another connection led to the Brandenburg-Briest military airfield, which was built later, and to the Brandenburg-Görden penitentiary or the later penal institution, and another to the transmission plant (now part of ZF Friedrichshafen ).

Northern rail connections: the track of the former Westhavelländische Kreisbahnen (Westhavelländische Kreisbahnen) going off at the back right, the city railroad to Rathenow at the back left, sidings for the city harbor and steelworks on the outside left

After the Second World War , traffic on the Westhavelländische Kreisbahnen was restricted due to the destruction of the bridges over the Silo Canal. The line ended at the newly created Silokanalbrücke stop, and the Brandenburg Altstadt station was no longer reached. In 1966, passenger traffic on this route was completely stopped. The track system was dismantled behind the Brielow expansion and up to that point only serves the freight traffic that drives from the old town station over the rebuilt silo canal bridge. In the 1970s and 1980s, Brandenburg-Altstadt was served by around twelve pairs of trains a day between Brandenburg Hauptbahnhof and Rathenow. In addition, there were a few trains at the shift change times of the steel and rolling mill, which drove from the old town station directly in the direction of Belzig without serving the Brandenburg main station.

After the political change in 1989/90, the city of Brandenburg was largely de-industrialized. The steel and rolling mill was dissolved, only a small part of the operation, the electric steel mill, was sold to the Riva Group and continued to be operated. The Brandenburg-Briest airfield was closed. This led to a sharp decline in freight traffic in the 1990s. However, as a result, new industrial companies were also established and, for example, a recycling plant and a Heidelberg printing machine plant were built and the city's industrial port was expanded, which in turn was connected to the rail network via the train station. There was also a slight recovery in traffic.

On November 30, 2003 the section of the urban railway between Rathenow Nord and Neustadt (Dosse) and on December 13, 2003 the section between Belzig and Brandenburg was put out of service. As early as 1997, the line from the Altstadt train station to the Brandenburg Süd depot was shut down, allowing direct journeys to Belzig without using the Brandenburg main train station. The Rathenow – Rathenow Nord section was given up on December 14, 2005, so that passenger trains only run on the reconstructed Brandenburg – Rathenow section, where the Brandenburg-Altstadt station is located. The Brandenburg – Rathenow Nord section was renovated between 2003 and 2005 for 55 million euros and put back into operation on June 27, 2005.

In September 2007 Ostseeland Verkehr GmbH won the procedure for expressing interests initiated by VBB to operate the Rathenow – Brandenburg (Havel) section (RB51). From December 2007 to December 2011 it operated the route as MR51 with Desiro vehicles . Since December 2011, after a renewed invitation to tender, the East German Railway has been running the line, initially as OE51, with brand-new Stadler GTW . With the timetable change on December 9, 2012, the line designation was standardized to RB51, the line will continue to be operated by the East German Railway.

Former station building

Track side of the station building

The former station building of the station, which is no longer used, is empty. It is four stories. The lower two floors are bricked with red clinker bricks, between which some yellow clinker bricks are interposed as decorative elements. The windows on the lower floors are arched in segments. The brickwork on the upper two floors is plastered gray. The windows are rectangular. The entrance from the street side is in a narrow central projectile . The roof of the building is a flat gable roof . The central projectile has its own roof with a flat pointed gable .

The track side of the entrance building is designed similar to the street side. The difference is a one-story porch at the building exit with a flat monopitch roof . There is also a single-storey extension on the north side of the building. To the south there are two that were at least partially used as sheds . As these extensions are also built with red bricks.

Station shed

Further, partially isolated station sheds are located south of the entrance building. These are used, among other things, as club rooms for a motorcycle club .

Today's infrastructure

During the renovation of the Brandenburg-Rathenow railway line from 2003 to 2005, the Altstadt station was rebuilt. Since then there has only been one platform track. More than twenty additional tracks are reserved for through and freight traffic. The old station building is unused. The platform was raised to enable boarding and alighting at the level of the running railcars. There is a shelter that was erected in glass construction. Access to the old station building with the waiting hall and ticket issuance is blocked. The platform can be reached directly from Zanderstrasse ( Bundesstrasse 1 and Bundesstrasse 102 ). A stop at Bahnhof Altstadt on Magdeburger Landstrasse above the station is served by lines 2 and 12 of the Brandenburg tram . In night traffic, this stop is approached by night bus N2. There is a bus stop on Zanderstraße in front of the train station, which is served by bus line K of the Brandenburg an der Havel transport company. The Brandenburg District Court, the campus of the Technical University of Brandenburg and two industrial areas are in the immediate vicinity of the train station .
