The Graben-Neudorf train station is located in the Baden municipality of Graben-Neudorf . It is of particular importance in rail transport because it forms a railway junction . The Rhine Valley Railway between Mannheim and Basel and the Bruhrain Railway between Bruchsal and Germersheim cross in it .

In addition, the strategic railway, opened in 1895, branched off here and the original Rheinbahn continued to live as the Hardtbahn (Graben-Neudorf - Eggenstein  - Karlsruhe ), which was closed in 1967 . The station was classified in station category 4 until the end of 2014, and in category 3 since 2015.

Location and facilities

Overview of the Graben-Neudorf train station. On the left in the picture the old station building, behind it the new station building and the signal box.

The Graben-Neudorf train station is centrally located between the districts of Graben and Neudorf in the municipality of Graben-Neudorf, on the southern edge of the Neudorf district . The Neudorf district on the east side of the railway line through the residential and industrial area Mitte-Ost with the associated shopping mile on Heidelberger Strasse has grown significantly closer to the train station. The current station building of the station was inaugurated in 1980. The relay interlocking was put into operation in 1982. Apart from a waiting area, which is not always open, the station building no longer fulfills any operational function. Part of the building is rented to a security company. A bakery branch is operated in another part of the building . In the old station building which now houses municipal library .

The Graben-Neudorf station has five tracks accessible to passenger traffic on a total of three platforms with a platform height of 76 centimeters (standard on the RheinNeckar S-Bahn ), two elevators, electronic train destination displays and automated announcements to announce the arrival of passenger trains . The S 33 line of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn went into operation on the Bruhrainbahn (Germersheim - Bruchsal) in December 2011 and replaces (apart from a few connections in the morning) the previous class 628 diesel multiple units . Two of the latest generation of ticket machines with a touchscreen function are available for purchasing tickets for public transport, local and long-distance transport .

The station can be reached from the west and east and has plenty of parking spaces and bicycle parking spaces on both sides. The underpass for pedestrians and cyclists connects both directions, the Bahnhofsring in the west with Heidelberger Straße in the east.

Regional traffic

The regular train services in regional traffic are the RE4 and RB2. The RE4 (in the KVV: R 92) runs every two hours to Frankfurt (Main) and Karlsruhe, with the trains to Karlsruhe only starting in Mainz. The RB2 runs in advance for the lines S8 and S9 of the S-Bahn RheinNeckar, it provides hourly connections to Mannheim and Karlsruhe. Often these trains are extended to Biblis in order to increase the pace with further repeater trains (possibly as RE2, which omits some stops on the same route). In the morning, a regional express runs to Stuttgart.

Rhein-Neckar S-Bahn

Graben-Neudorf is served hourly by the S33. It runs on the Bruhrainbahn between Germersheim and Bruchsal. In some cases, the cycle is also condensed into an almost half-hourly service.

Bus transport

Since December 2007 the Graben-Neudorf train station has been connected to the bus network again. The bus routes Hochstetten –Neudorf and Graben-Neudorf– Dettenheim serve the bus stop called Graben-Neudorf Bahnhof. The bus stop is opposite the station building on Bahnhofsring . The two bus lines are operated in the Karlsruhe Transport Association (KVV) by Regionalbusverkehr Südwest GmbH (RVS) as a licensee and, on their behalf, partly by various private bus companies from the region with the line numbers 124 (Hochstetten – Neudorf) and 198 (Graben-Neudorf – Dettenheim) operated. Bus line 199 (Graben-Neudorf– Hambrücken ), which was operated on an experimental basis in 2009/2010, was discontinued for the 2011 annual timetable.

To serve the train station, the regular buses turn from the main street in Graben-Neudorf Mitte onto the station ring and then return to the main street. The bus stop Graben-Neudorf Bahnhof is between the bus stop Graben-Neudorf Zentrum and Neudorf Amalienstraße. The arrival and departure times of the buses are not coordinated with all Deutsche Bahn trains .

history

Opening and development to the hub

The  history of the station began with the opening of the Mannheim - Schwetzingen - Graben-Neudorf - Eggenstein - Karlsruhe railway on August 4, 1870. On November 23, 1874 the Bruhrainbahn to Rheinsheim was opened, which was extended to Germersheim on May 15, 1877.

In 1895, the strategic railway line Graben-Neudorf - Blankenloch  - Karlsruhe - Durmersheim  - Rastatt  - Haguenau was opened, which sidelined the Graben-Neudorf - Eggenstein - Karlsruhe branch line, henceforth known as the Hardtbahn .

From around 1890 long-distance trains on the route Saarbrücken  - Zweibrücken  - Biebermühle  - Landau  - Germersheim - Bruchsal - Bretten  - Stuttgart  - Munich ran on the Bruhrain Railway, as did the Rhine Valley Railway Mannheim Karlsruhe . After the Second World War , long-distance traffic in the east-west direction lost its importance and was discontinued on the Bruhrain Railway.

Despite the fact that the station was the junction of two national highways , it was never a stop for long-distance trains.

20th century

In 1967 operations on the Hardtbahn were discontinued and the line between Graben-Neudorf and Leopoldshafen was dismantled. Between 1987 and 1989 the Hardtbahn was reactivated with a partially changed route through the town centers to Hochstetten. Today the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) operates the tram lines S1 and S11 of the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund here with a high level of passenger acceptance . An extension to Graben-Neudorf on the old railway line was considered, but it does not seem feasible, especially since Graben-Neudorf is directly connected to Karlsruhe via the Rhine Valley Railway. In the long term, a continuation of the Hardtbahn from Hochstetten via Dettenheim to Philippsburg appears more promising .

In 1972 there was a dangerous accident in the train station. A barrel in the form of a lead box, which contained plutonium and was supposed to be transported by freight train to the then nuclear research center in Karlsruhe , tipped over and rolled onto the track at the Graben-Neudorf station. It was thrown into the air by passing trains. The barrel was then searched for in protective suits, after hours it was found, luckily without any leakage of plutonium.

On May 30 and 31, 1987, a large station festival took place on the occasion of the opening of the new line section between Mannheim and Graben-Neudorf.

Station name

In colloquial and railway language, the Graben-Neudorf station is often referred to only as "Graben". In Karlsruhe Hbf , the abbreviation “Graben-N.” Is used in the departure plans, as is the case with other station names with a hyphen (e.g. “ Kassel-W. ”, “ Wiesloch-W. ”, “ Bietigheim-B. ”) this is justified there with a lack of space.

Further stations in Graben-Neudorf

In addition to the Graben-Neudorf train station, there is also a Graben-Neudorf Nord stop in the municipality . This is on the Germersheim – Bruchsal ( Bruhrainbahn ) line at 10.7 km in the north-west of the Neudorf district on Molzaustraße. It was put into operation in May 1994 together with the start of the Karlsruhe transport association and the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle . Today only the S33 line of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn stops here.
