history

Until the 19th century

The place is mentioned for the first time in 1161 , at that time it belonged to the knight monastery Odenheim . The place name goes back to the Old High German "Hagan" (forest or bush) and "Brucca" (bridge or Knüppeldamm). "Brucca" also gave rise to the word "Bruch" (swamp), landscape forms that can still be found in the area around the village today, for example. B. in the nature reserve Saalbachauen.

In 1366 at the latest, the place came under the rule of the Prince Diocese of Speyer . Hambrücken lost most of its population as a result of the Thirty Years' War . Therefore the prince-bishop called settlers from all areas of Germany. The surnames Simianer and Soder, which are not typical for the region, come from the Alpine region. With the mediatization due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , the place came in 1803 to the Grand Duchy of Baden .

Religions

The Catholic parish church of St. Remigius is also called the Lußhardt Cathedral .

Although the place was owned by the church, a parish church was first mentioned in 1510. This wooden church was replaced by Prince-Bishop Damian Hugo von Schönborn with a massive baroque church with an onion dome, which he inaugurated himself in 1742. This church was replaced by the current church at the turn of the century. Since the Reformation did not reach the place, most of the citizens are still Roman Catholic today . The community in Waghäusel is responsible for the small Protestant part of the population .
