The station Eppingen is the train station of the city of Eppingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg . It is a branching station in which the Steinsfurt – Eppingen railway branches off from the Kraichgau Railway (Heilbronn – Eppingen – Karlsruhe railway). It is served by the S 4 of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn and the Heilbronn Stadtbahn on the one hand, and by the S 5 of the Rhein-Neckar S-Bahn on the other. Eppingen is one of the three Kraichgau-Sprinter stops between Karlsruhe Hbf and Heilbronn Hbf. The next train registration points are Sulzfeld (direction Bretten / Karlsruhe), Gemmingen (direction Heilbronn) and Steinsfurt (direction Sinsheim / Heidelberg).

history

Emergence

In the 1870s, the station was built together with the Kraichgaubahn from Karlsruhe-Grötzingen to Heilbronn by the municipality of Karlsruhe, and it was bought by the Baden State Railway in October 1879 . In August 1880, the Württemberg section of the route from Heilbronn was added.

Eppingen was chosen as the changing station, among other things, because a further expansion at Heilbronn main station would not only be associated with high costs, but also the establishment of the station, but especially the management of another track in the same for exclusive use for Baden, various changes and many Would cause trouble. However, the passenger and luggage traffic was already carried out consistently by the Baden railway. A railway line from Bruchsal to Eppingen was also planned as a continuation of the Bruhrain Railway , but this was not implemented due to the Bruchsal – Bretten line that had been created in the meantime .

Even then, there were considerations about connecting routes from Ubstadt through the Kraichbachtal and via Sickingen ( Flehingen ) to Eppingen, as well as from Eppingen to Grombach or via Steinsfurt to Helmstadt or Waibstadt (to the Baden Odenwaldbahn ). In 1900 the Steinsfurt – Eppingen railway was opened.

A post office and an inn “Zur Eisenbahn” were built near the current “Bahnhofstrasse” level crossing. There was a goods shed and a locomotive shed for each of the two railways.

Light rail time

An AVG light rail on platform 2

In 1996 the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) leased the station together with the Kraichgaubahn for 25 years and modernized it for the Karlsruhe light rail . Among other things, the mechanical signal boxes were replaced by an ESTW.

In 2006, the city of Eppingen acquired the 120 m long and 5470 m 2 strip of land south of the freight station, which was previously used by a freight forwarder and the Dieffenbacher company , and set up vehicle parking spaces there.

At the end of 2009, the RheinNeckar S-Bahn was extended to Eppingen. A new track was built to make it easier to change between the S-Bahn systems, and the platforms were increased from 38 cm to 55 cm (tracks 1, 2 and part of track 3 for Karlsruhe Stadtbahn) and 76 cm (track 22 and part of track) 3) increased, which cost about three million euros. Before that, the trains to and from Steinsfurt stopped on track 1 or 2, the Karlsruhe light rail in the direction of Heilbronn on track 3, and those in the direction of Karlsruhe on the remaining track. During the construction period there was a makeshift platform on track 4, where the trains to Steinsfurt stopped. Since the renovation, the S-Bahn from Steinsfurt has stopped on track 22 on the Zungenbahn platform , the light rail on tracks 2 and 3.

Railway systems

The station consists of the station parts Eppingen West, Eppingen Pbf and Stebbach.

In the western part of the station Eppingen West, due to the existing signal systems coming from Sulzfeld, only the right track can be used. In the opposite direction, however, both tracks can be used, whereby the signals in the Eppingen Pbf station section serve as exit signals. On each of the two tracks there is a 120 m long outside platform according to the AVG standard. To the east of the platforms is the level crossing at km 40.020 “Mühlbacher Straße”.

Next to the level crossing at km 40.513 "Bahnhofstrasse" is the Ew signal box , which was decommissioned in July 1997, a mechanical signal box of the standard design, which is probably a listed building. The city of Eppingen bought it in 2009 from DB Netz AG, which had previously leased it to AVG along with the line, and made it available to the Heimatfreunde Eppingen association .

The main part of the station consists of the two continuous main tracks 1 and 3, the main track 2 in between, the one connected to track 2 only at the east end during the renovation at the end of 2009 and the main track 22 located south of this, the 529 m south of track 3 long main track 4, as well as the local parking areas at the freight yard and storage hall. Journeys at line speed are possible through platform 3 and from platform 2 in the direction of Karlsruhe. From track 1 to Stebbach you can drive at 80 km / h (instead of 50 km / h from the other tracks), but only on the left track.

The house platform is now 120 m long and 55 cm high and was 160 m long and 38 cm high until the beginning of 2010. Tracks 2, 3 and 22 are located on a shared island or tongue platform , the main part of which is 55 cm high and the part next to track 22 (there also on track 3) is 76 cm high. The low part of the platform is 120 m long, the high part on track 22 140 m, on track 3 165 m. Since the modernization at the end of 2009, the central platform can be reached from the main platform via passenger crossings in kilometers 40.710 and 40.842 - at the ends of platforms 1 and 2. Before that, there was a passenger crossing to the then 38 cm high and 160 m long platform in the middle of the reception building.

Tracks 5 to 9 in May 2005

In the freight yard area are the 460 m and 385 m long side tracks 5 and 7, which are connected to track 4 in the west and lead to a pull-out track in the east , which can also be reached from track 4. In between is the 430 m long track 6, which is only connected to track 7 in the east. South of this is the only west connected, 120 m long track 8 with a loading gauge for a loading ramp at the Raiffeisen grain warehouse, as well as the 290 m long track 9 on the Loading street with a gantry crane and a former weighbridge until around 2007 . On headshunt of the level crossing is located in the area of 41.652 km "Lanz Straße" siding of a recycling company. In contrast to all other station tracks, these tracks are not spanned with overhead lines. Until 1992, this was the largest sugar beet loading facility in southern Germany.

To the northeast is a three-track storage hall of the AVG, whose tracks are connected to track 1 to the west. The tracks can be used by EBO standard vehicles that can travel on 140 m curve radii. The hall tracks 15 and 16 are 120 m long. The southernmost hall track, 14, is 165 m long and is also connected to track 1 at the rear of the hall towards the east.

The Stebbach station section only includes the remaining double-track section. Its two main tracks thus have a usable length of about 3.75 km each, but there are no shunting routes. At the end of this, the tracks come together at points 62 - with track 3 as a straight line - at the top of which is the change of route as a remnant of the border between Baden and Württemberg. Shortly before, the line to Steinsfurt branches off from track 1 at switch 61; The local infrastructure border to DB Netz is after about 250 m at the entrance signal G.

The ESTW , which is responsible for the route from Bauerbach to Heilbronn, is located in the station. The SICAS S5 interlocking was put into operation in July 1997 and was operated on site by two employees until the end of 2011. It is now controlled by a VICOS-OC-111 remote control from the central control center in Karlsruhe (ZeLeiKa).

Reception building

Elevation of the reception building when it opened in 1879

The reception building , which has been preserved to this day, was built in 1879 according to plans by the Karlsruhe architect Ludwig Diemer in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style.

The station building was renovated in 2004 and the signal box was relocated. It received two winter garden- like glass extensions, in which a standing café was set up to the east; In the west, the dispatcher workstations are located behind mirrored windows. In addition, the Benz travel agency was in the building with ticket sales and city tourist information. The office space on the ground floor of the west tower was used by various organizations. A restaurant was planned in the east tower. Since January 1, 2005, smoking has been prohibited in the reception building . In June 2005, a DB ServiceStore was opened, which closed eight months later and was to be reopened in 2007 with another lessee who also took over the ServiceStores in Durlach and Bretten, but this failed due to doubts about profitability.

The city of Eppingen had been interested in acquiring the building for a long time - as early as the early 2000s, 500,000 German marks were earmarked for this - without being able to reach an agreement with DB when DB Immobilien put the building up for sale in October 2012. The city announced that it would not bid and bought the building before the end of the year for € 450,000, with real estate transfer tax for € 478,000. The historic building with almost 1000 m² of usable space has belonged to the city of Eppingen since January 1, 2013 and is a listed building .

On June 25, 2013, the local council decided to modernize the building, which cost around € 2.68 million. The preparatory work began in September 2013, and the renovation was largely completed by September 2016. The two extensions were removed again. Since the end of 2014, the central building has been available to travelers again as a lounge and contains a public toilet facility. The "Diakonische Jugendhilfe Region Heilbronn" (DJHN) is now tenant of the offices in both towers for 20 years and has its administrative headquarters there. The city has annual rental income of around € 72,000 from the reception building, which can cover the costs.

The DJHN now operates a café in the reception building which, at the request of the city, will also offer staff-operated ticket sales at the beginning of 2017. The city wants to compensate for the resulting loss.

environment

The train station is located south of the old town, on the right bank of the Elsenz .

To the west of the reception building is the bus station for the city bus routes to the surrounding towns, to the east there is a bicycle and vehicle parking lot, opposite which there is a Kaufland market - until the opening of the new building in November 2010 as a trading yard. As part of the expansion of the shop, the confluence of the streets Altstadtring, Bahnhofstrasse and Eisenbahnstrasse in front of the reception building was converted into a roundabout at the expense of the neighboring company, which was put into operation on April 16, 2010. In the new building, which opened on May 10, 2010, the company is testing various climate protection measures. During construction work there was a crane accident on December 1, 2009, in which a heavy reinforced concrete part fell onto a truck and another crane due to material fatigue. The shop had to close temporarily at the end of April 2017 due to subsidence of the building and is due to reopen at the end of the same year with a new floor slab and supporting piles underneath.

In front of the reception building on the other side of the street is a park on both sides of the Elsenz, which borders the old town in the north.

The "Oststadt" industrial area is located in the southeast of the station. A school center is located a few hundred meters to the southwest. To the north of the Eppingen West section of the station is the “Weststadt” industrial park.
