Frankenbahn to Bad Friedrichshall S 41 S 42

The rail Heilbronn is one of three lines existing two-system tramtrain after Karlsruhe model and is used by the Albtal traffic Society (AVG), the public utilities Heilbronn (SWH) and the Deutsche Bahn AG operated together (DB). It runs outside of built-up areas on railway lines according to the Railway Construction and Operating Regulations (EBO) and within Heilbronn according to the Ordinance on the Construction and Operation of Trams (BOStrab).

The oldest line of the system, the S4, is an extension of a line of the Karlsruhe light rail system that has existed since 1992 . It has been traveling via Eppingen to Heilbronn main station since 1999 and has been changing there since 2001 to the then newly built Heilbronn inner city route. In 2005, the line was to Öhringen expanded and simultaneously in the transport association Heilbronner Hohenloher Haller transport (HNV even H3NV) integrated. In 2013 a new branch to Neckarsulm went into operation, which is served by the S42. Since 2014, this has continued to Sinsheim via Bad Friedrichshall , while the new S41 also runs via Bad Friedrichshall to Mosbach .

General

S-Bahn signet as a logo for the Heilbronn Stadtbahn

Like the Stadtbahn Karlsruhe , the Stadtbahn Heilbronn also combines the idea of a high-performance inner-city tram with the development of the region similar to an S-Bahn . Only the green and white S-Bahn signet is used as the logo, without the name of the system being “S-Bahn”. The name is "Stadtbahn". This is a rather unusual adaptation of the term to the S-Bahn, which is otherwise designed as a pure railway in Germany, the abbreviation of which stands for Stadtschnellbahn . However, the reason for using the S-Bahn symbol is that the operating tasks of the two systems are similar: to connect the city and the suburb or the surrounding area with one another.

West-East route

The trams on the S4 line coming from Karlsruhe from Eppingen initially take the Kraichgaubahn via Gemmingen , Stetten , Schwaigern and Leingarten . The Kraichgaubahn then crosses the Böckingen district and stops at the Böckingen West , Vocational School Center and Sun Fountain stops . Behind it, the tracks cross the Heilbronn Canal Harbor on a bridge and cross the tracks of the Frankenbahn as planned . Shortly before the main train station, the inner-city line of the Stadtbahn branches off, which belongs to the Heilbronn municipal utility . Immediately after the transition from EBO to BOStrab, the trains stop in front of the main station at the Hauptbahnhof / Willy-Brandt-Platz stop . The electrical system separation point is shortly afterwards in a northern lateral position at the beginning of Bahnhofstrasse. Since the trains roll without power for a short time, the 100 meter long section is built on both sides so that disruptions can be safely avoided. There is a thick hedge towards the sidewalk, and a dense partition about one meter high towards the street.

The trains then continue to run with direct current, initially next to Bahnhofstrasse , but change to the central position shortly before the Neckarturm stop on Kurt-Schumacher-Platz . The Experimenta Heilbronn is in the immediate vicinity . A few meters further on, the tram crosses the Neckar on the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke . The route now follows Kaiserstrasse , where the Rathaus stop is at the market square . At its eastern end, Kaiserstrasse joins the avenue . There, the north branch branches off from the older west-east route, on which the light rail lines S41 and S42 follow the avenue northwards. The older S4 light rail line, on the other hand, crosses the broad street axis and reaches the Harmonie stop right behind it .

The route then leads straight ahead in the middle of Moltkestrasse to the Friedensplatz stop , where students from the local high schools get on and off. Then it continues east to the Finanzamt stop . The tram now follows Bismarckstrasse and Jägerhausstrasse on the left to the Pfühlpark stop , behind which the inner city route ends with another system changeover point. The trains return to the DB route via a small ramp, which then runs through the Weinsberger Tunnel shortly after the Trappensee stop . On the railway line, the S4 line finally reaches Öhringen via Weinsberg, Ellhofen, Obersulm and Bretzfeld.

North branch

At the avenue , the north branch branches off from the older west-east route and runs along this north. The tracks are laid in separate directions on both sides of the wide street. Directly north of the junction are the Harmonie / Kunsthalle stops on the east side of the avenue, which is approached out of town, and Harmonie / Hafenmarktpassage , which is on the other side of the avenue and is served into town. At the northern end of the avenue, the tracks turn left and run in the middle of Weinsberger Strasse, where the Theater stop is located. Immediately behind this, the trams turn right into Paulinenstrasse and follow its course to the Technisches Schulzentrum stop . You cross under the tracks of the Crailsheim – Heilbronn railway and the Frankenbahn and then run next to Salzstraße to Industrieplatz, where you turn into Austraße and pass the Industrieplatz stop . The trains continue in the middle of Austraße to the stop Hans-Rießer-Straße . There they turn into the eponymous Hans-Rießer-Straße and follow it to the east end, right next to the tracks of the Frankenbahn, next to which the route then runs. The Kaufland stop and the Neckarsulm Süd stop , which is located in the area of the city of Neckarsulm, are located on this section .

business

Today the S4 runs in both directions three times an hour between Heilbronn Pfühlpark and Schwaigern West with all stops, one of which continues to Karlsruhe. In addition, an express train to Karlsruhe runs once an hour from / to Weinsberg, which connects to the DB regional trains in Weinsberg. In addition, there are two pairs of sprinter trains that stop between Heilbronn Hbf and Karlsruhe Hbf only in Eppingen, Bretten and Karlsruhe-Durlach. The route between Heilbronn and Öhringen is served Monday to Saturday every 30 minutes, every hour on Sunday; Every hour throughout the week in Öhringen there is a connection to the regional train to Schwäbisch Hall-Hessental and Crailsheim. In the morning peak hours there are additional trains, with almost everyone coming from Karlsruhe or going to Karlsruhe, in the afternoon peak hours S4 trains are also extended from Heilbronn to Öhringen. There are also additional trains for school transport at lunchtime. On Saturday afternoons, 2 pairs of trains are extended from Heilbronn to Eschenau. If a Sprinter is running, the priority from Öhringen to Karlsruhe is tied through and does not end / does not start in Schwaigern West, but continues to / from Karlsruhe and has a downtime of approx. 10-15 minutes in Eppingen for the purpose of overhauling the Sprinter. Around 13,400 people are transported on the route between Öhringen and Heilbronn every working day. This corresponds to a five-fold increase compared to the number of passengers on the "old Hohenlohebahn".

The north branch is served by lines S41 and S42, both of which start on the forecourt of Heilbronn main station and go towards Bad Friedrichshall. From there the S41 continues to Mosbach , the S42 via Bad Rappenau to Sinsheim . There is a connection to the RheinNeckar S-Bahn at both endpoints . The S41 line runs every hour via Mosbach-Neckarelz to Mosbach (Baden) and also every hour between Mosbach (Baden) and Mosbach-Neckarelz to provide a connection to the RE10a. The S42 line runs twice an hour Monday to Friday to Bad Rappenau and, once an hour, to Sinsheim Hbf. On Saturdays / Sundays, a few pairs of trains run every 2 hours to supplement the timetable between Heilbronn and Bad Rappenau. The cycle times vary, however, since in Bad Rappenau there is a 10-20 minute downtime every 2 hours for the purpose of overhauling the RE10b. The drivers for the trains in the north branch are provided by DB Regio. Due to the lack of personnel trained for light rail operations there, there were relatively frequent cancellations over a long period of time.

The neighboring districts and municipalities contribute to the operating costs. For example, the district of Heilbronn and the neighboring communities each paid around 1.25 million euros in 2017. Offenau and Gundelsheim contributed together with 162,000 euros in 2015. Some of them criticize the lack of improvements by the light rail system and call for a faster cycle in the event of the restoration of direct connections to Stuttgart.

history

Construction of the east-west route

The final stop of the tram is in Öhringen-Cappel

In 1991, a good 35 years after the last trams in Heilbronn , the introduction of a light rail network based on the Karlsruhe model was discussed for the first time. The subsequently created public transport model received the approval of the Heilbronn municipal council on September 6, 1994. Even then, today's S4 should go into operation as the first line. An important step here was the extension of the Karlsruhe light rail line S4 to Eppingen in the west of the Heilbronn district in June 1997 .

With regard to the new light rail line, tracks were laid in Kaiserstraße when it was rebuilt in 1998. From March 12, 1998, the trams ran between Eppingen and Heilbronn main station , initially only on the weekends, from September 27 of the same year daily. At the same time, the first section of the inner city route up to harmony was being planned. Construction work on the line began in June 2000, and on July 4, 2001, the first test drive took place on the line, which was finally opened on July 21.

On July 5, 2001, before the opening of the first section, the route to the Pfühlpark was determined. The starting shot for the construction work was given on September 9, 2003, which also included the demolition of the Bottwartalbahn bridge over Jägerhausstraße, as it stood in the way of the overhead lines. This section went into operation on November 25, 2004. The entire inner city route cost around 52.7 million euros.

The connection to the Crailsheim – Heilbronn railway has existed since December 10, 2005, and the S4 has been running since then until the end of the line in Öhringen . In the course of the extension, the Karlstor railway station on the Crailsheim – Heilbronn railway line in the city area was closed.

Construction of the north branch

Installation of an auxiliary bridge at the underpass of the railway tracks at Sülmertor (June 2012)
Inaugural special train of the northern light rail on December 14, 2013

On June 21, 2007, Stadtwerke Heilbronn GmbH awarded major plans worth 1.2 million euros for the construction of the northern line.

On June 22, 2007, the neighboring municipalities, the district of Heilbronn and Deutsche Bahn AG signed a planning agreement for the approx. 77 million euro expansion of the Heilbronn light rail into the northern district. Overall, the expansion will cost around 136 million euros. The Neckar-Odenwald district contributed 2.8 million euros to these costs.

On May 4, 2005, the Heilbronn municipal council decided on the route of the new BOStrab line through the urban area with costs of an estimated 59 million euros. On December 20, 2007, the location of the route on the avenue was determined.

In September 2010, the parliamentary groups of CDU, FDP, FWV, SPD and Left submitted a joint application in the Heilbronn municipal council to instead lead the route through the city via Mannheimer Straße, Europaplatz and Weipertstraße. After several special meetings of the municipal council, the parliamentary groups dropped their application, and the planned route over Paulinenstraße is now fixed.

On January 13, 2011, the planning approval decision for the section in downtown Heilbronn was issued by the Stuttgart regional council. Preparatory work took place from April 2010, mainly supply lines were laid in the area of the route. In the summer of 2011, the underpass at Sülmertor began. The underpass at Sülmertor was decorated for 30,000 euros with a street art project by the Swiss artist Adrian Falkner.

The city administration of Heilbronn expects the entire project to be completed by the end of 2014. [obsolete] The total costs for the northern tram are expected to be 84.2 million euros.

Due to the delayed EBO approval for ET 2010 , the section between Kaufland and Neckarsulm was temporarily dedicated as a BOStrab line. The first test drive on this section took place on November 4, 2013. Until the reallocation to the EBO route and the release of the connection to the DB network took place in December 2014, the trams only ran to Neckarsulm. The connection of the trains to Sinsheim was only possible on May 1, 2015 due to delays in a bridge renewal in Bad Wimpfen.

Planning

The plan was to build a 140-kilometer urban railway network to connect the region to Heilbronn city center by 2010. A line was to lead south via Lauffen (Neckar) to Zaberfeld . In the north, two lines were created via Neckarsulm and Bad Friedrichshall to Mosbach - Neckarelz and Mosbach and further via Bad Rappenau to Sinsheim , where there is a connection to the RheinNeckar S-Bahn .

Zabergäubahn

The Zabergäubahn has been part of the public transport model for the city and district of Heilbronn since 1999. In 2004, the Zabergäu municipalities demanded the implementation of the so-called southern branch of the urban railway concept, which should lead via Lauffen and further on the Zabergäu railway into the Zabergäu. This is important for the demographic development, for the settlement structure and the economic development of the Zabergäus. The demand was supported by a new standardized assessment of the cost-benefit ratio and supported by the district CDU. When the grants were cut by a good 2.3 billion euros in 2009, the realization of the southern branch was postponed. The reason given was that rail traffic in Zabergäu in Zaberfeld would end in a structural dead end. A breakthrough in the direction of Knittlingen / Bretten would have been necessary, but was not implemented for reasons of cost. The Zabergäubahn was originally supposed to be operational again by 2011 and would probably have had a stop in the Klingenberg district of Heilbronn . In 2012 a new report for the Zabergäubahn is to be drawn up. The mayor of Güglingen , Klaus Dieterich, underlines the current necessity for the region: "The railway is important for the Zabergäu". However, since the general conditions have changed in the meantime, this research result is no longer accepted by the state.

In 2017, the Local Agenda 21 advocates the continuation of the southern axis into Zabergäu. On Monday, March 20, 2017, the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) presented its feasibility study on the Zabergäubahn to the administrative committee of the district council. Accordingly, the Zabergäubahn can be reactivated on the old route. Planned further stops are to be built in Böckingen, Klingenberg, Lauffen-Süd and Güglingen (Sophienstrasse).

Bottwartalbahn

In 2004, the extension of the south branch to include the Bottwartalbahn was problematic. The situation looked very different for the northern part (Heilbronn – Beilstein urban railway ) and the southern part ( MarbachBeilstein urban railway ): The northern part of the Bottwartalbahn (Heilbronn – Beilstein urban railway) was supposed to be “... very long-term and ultimately everyone other light rail projects ... “. In contrast, the implementation of the southern part of the Bottwartalbahn (urban railway line Marbach – Beilstein) appeared "[much more] realistic". The construction of route B2, which would lead from the planned final stop of the Marbach – Beilstein line at the fire station in Bahnhofstrasse via Winzerhausener Weg along the new development area West III (parallel to the road bypass) to Auenstein, appeared realistic. The route was included in the land use plan of the GVV "Schozach-Bottwartal" . In 2005, however, Günter Henzler declared: “In the next 10 to 15 years, from a realistic point of view, construction cannot be considered”. The plans for the southern part of the Bottwartalbahn (Marbach – Beilstein) were postponed.

In 2012 the investigation from 2004 is to be resumed. The first part of the standardized investigation in 2004 could not clearly prove the profitability of the planned tram route. As a result, in 2004 Beilstein, Oberstenfeld, Großbottwar, Steinheim and Murr waived the second part of the standardized examination, while the city of Marbach wanted to have the second part examined. However, all neighboring municipalities had undertaken to keep the planned tram route free in their land-use plans. Due to the changed political situation in Baden-Württemberg, in 2012 the communities of Ilsfeld, Abstatt and Untergruppenbach and the city of Beilstein formulated the Ludwigsburg district administrator Rainer Haas "great interest in a standardized investigation part B". On May 22, 2012, Beilstein decided to implement the second part of the standardized examination. Beilstein would like to have the more detailed standardized investigation B tested in two variants. For example, the cost-benefit factor with the possible Beilstein final stop and the factor for a tram route to the Schozachtal. Haas affirmed that "the Bottwartalbahn project is still current" and that "a resumption of the project is basically possible". Individual sections of the Bottwartalbahn such as Ilsfeld– Sontheim are now used as a railway cycle path . The Local Agenda 21 requested the extension of the southern axis into the Bottwartal in 2017.

In 2017, the Stuttgart Region Association presented a draft for its new regional traffic plan with the Bottwartalbahn for the route from Marbach to Beilstein with "high urgency". The stretch from Marbach to Beilstein would cost 75 million euros and last until 2030. There is “still a need” for an extension into the Schozachtal, explains the Stuttgart regional association.

The qualified archivist Wolfram Berner of the Bottwartalbahn initiative, founded in 2015, calls for a light rail system that can run on both light rail and DB tracks (dual-system regional light rail). The Bottwartalbahn initiative rejects the draft of the Stuttgart Association: The “Marbach-Beilstein island solution is not a solution for us.” Wolfram Berner from the Bottwartalbahn initiative says: “The concept only works as a whole, from Heilbronn to Marbach.” You want a Beilstein railway network with two sections: a route between Marbach and Beilstein and a second route between Beilstein and Heilbronn. The Marbach-Beilstein branch should largely run on or along the original route. The Heilbronn – Beilstein branch should no longer run via Schozach, Talheim and Sontheim as it originally did. The route proposal of the citizens' initiative provides for a route through Ilsfeld, Abstatt, Happenbach, Untergruppenbach and Flein to Heilbronn in the direction of Harmonie. The Heilbronn system of the Stadtbahn is to be adapted, extended and expanded.

Since 2006, a route proposal for the Bottwartalbahn from Beilstein via Auenstein and Abstatt to Untergruppenbach in the direction of Flein to Heilbronn has been entered in the regional plan of the Heilbronn-Franken regional association.

Extension of the main line

An extension of the main line via Öhringen-Cappel to Waldenburg or Schwäbisch Hall is under public discussion. A connection to Künzelsau from Waldenburg was examined. However, the investigation showed a benefit-cost factor below 1.0, so that implementation is not eligible for funding.
