The Neckarsulm Station is the largest train station of Baden-Württemberg district town Neckarsulm . In it, the northern city route which leads rail Heilbronn in the Franconia Railway one from Stuttgart to Würzburg. It is located in the network area of Heilbronner Nahverkehr (HNV).

history

Planning, construction and opening

Already between 1855 and 1857 there were plans to build a railway line from Heilbronn to Crailsheim (and from there via the network of the Royal Bavarian State Railways to Nuremberg ). For a long time it was unclear whether the final route should be over Neckarsulm and Neuenstadt or over the Weinsberger Tal . All cities and municipalities that had an interest in railway construction - including Neckarsulm - turned to the High Estates Assembly in various memoranda to shed light on the advantages of a railway line through the respective municipality. Topographical reasons spoke in favor of the variant via Neckarsulm, since no tunnel construction would have been necessary there. The then Oberamtsstadt Neckarsulm justified its concern with economic considerations. However, the trading town of Heilbronn feared a major loss of importance on a tour through Neckarsulm, as Neckarsulm would have received such a port with a railway junction . In addition, the communities in the Weinsberger Valley would have remained permanently without a rail link. On May 25, 1858, the High Estates Assembly finally voted for the route via Weinsberg instead of Neckarsulm. By signing the Railway Act on November 17, 1858, the King of Württemberg also finally opted for the variant through the Weinsberger Valley .

In 1864, under the direction of building officer Carl Julius Abel, construction work began on the Frankenbahn in the section from Heilbronn via Neckarsulm and Kochendorf to Jagstfeld (today: Bad Friedrichshall Hbf) , where there was a connection to the network of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways . The three-storey station building in Neckarsulm was planned by railway construction inspector Schurr and built from sandstone . It was created in the arched style . The construction work was completed on September 11, 1866 with the ceremonial opening by the Royal Württemberg State Railways (KWSt.E).

In the beginning there were waiting rooms of the II. And III. Class, a post office, the telegraph service and a luggage office on the ground floor of the reception building. Apartments for railway employees were housed on the two upper floors.

Further development

In 1885, the mining of rock salt began in the nearby Heilbronn salt mine . In order to be able to transport away the produced quantities of rock salt, the construction of an industrial track was originally planned from the salt works south in the direction of Heilbronn main station. However, since most of the salt was deposited north of Heilbronn, the construction of a connecting line in a northerly direction to the Neckarsulm train station seemed more sensible, as the costs for transporting the salt were lower due to the more direct route. In addition, the area in the direction of Neckarsulm was more suitable for building a siding than the area in the direction of Heilbronn train station. In 1886 a 2.6 km long connecting line was finally opened from Neckarsulm train station to the salt works. This connecting line could also be used by other industrial companies if required. Four years later, the salt works was also connected from Heilbronn. These routes were the origin of the Heilbronn industrial railway .

Due to the steadily increasing traffic, the Frankenbahn between Heilbronn and Jagstfeld was expanded to two tracks in 1893 . Thus, one track was available for each direction .

In 1901, the post office moved from the ground floor of the reception building to a newly built building on Bahnhofplatz, the Alte Post . The telegraph service remained in the station.

In 1907 a platform roof was planned for Neckarsulm.

In contrast to most of Neckarsulm's city center , the station building was not destroyed by the air raids during the Second World War.

In 1961, a heating center was planned for the ground floor of the reception building, which, in addition to the reception building itself, should also supply an auxiliary building and goods handling with heat. As part of this measure, the rooms in the basement of the reception building should also be renovated.

On October 1, 1972, the electrification of the Frankenbahn in the Heilbronn - Bad Friedrichshall-Jagstfeld section and thus also in Neckarsulm was completed.

Since 1991 marked the 125th anniversary of the opening of the railway line, a two-day station festival was celebrated in Neckarsulm on this occasion. It took place on September 21 and 22, 1991. An ICE - the flagship of the Deutsche Bundesbahn - was a special train as a guest in Neckarsulm and could be viewed by the festival visitors.

Development since 2000

Bahnhofsplatz after the redesign (2017)

After Deutsche Bahn AG had put the station building up for sale, it was acquired by the city of Neckarsulm on December 21, 2006. The area around the station building was declared a redevelopment area for Bahnhof Ost . As a result, various measures were taken to improve the urban quality of this area. For this purpose, the listed station building was completely renovated and modernized in the period from June 2011 to September 2012. The adjacent former goods handling facility was converted into a youth center under the name Gleis 3 . The station square was also fundamentally redesigned. A medical and service center was built on it, which also houses a bakery . A four-star hotel under the name Welcome Hotels Neckarsulm is currently being built between the station building and the signal box . It should be completed in summer 2017. The Alte Post building is being converted into a restaurant with a beer garden .

The level crossing on Untere Neckarstrasse north of the train station was closed to allow a better flow of road traffic within Neckarsulm.

In November 2013, trams from the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) came for the first time as part of test drives via the newly built northern inner-city route to Neckarsulm. On December 14th and 15th, 2013, the Heilbronn Hbf / Willy-Brandt-Platz - Neckarsulm section was officially opened. For the time being, all light rail trains coming from Heilbronn ended in Neckarsulm. On December 14, 2014, the extension to Mosbach (Baden) followed as the S41, the line to Sinsheim (Elsenz) Hbf has been operated as the S42 since mid-2015.

In the southern station apron there is a siding on both sides that can be used by light rail trains. The exit from track 4/5 onto the tracks of the Frankenbahn is equipped with a protective switch . In the early days of the Stadtbahn, tracks 4 and 5 were still operated under the Tram Construction and Operating Regulations ( BOStrab ), as the ET 2010 vehicles used were not approved for EBO routes. After approval has been granted by the Federal Railway Authority , the entire station area is operated in accordance with the Railway Construction and Operating Regulations ( EBO ).

Reception building

After the fundamental renovation in 2011/2012, there is a kiosk for travel supplies, a DB travel center , a waiting hall and public toilets on the ground floor of the reception building . The Neckarsulm notary's office is on the upper floor. The entire station building is wheelchair accessible and has an elevator.
