The Heilbronn industrial and port railway operated by Stadtwerke Heilbronn comprises a 23 km long track network in the Heilbronn industrial area Neckar and at the Heilbronn canal port .

history

Kleinäulein industrial railway

The developing industrial area Kleinäulein urgently needed a connection to the network of the Royal Württemberg State Railways in order to be able to relocate larger companies. This industrial area would later develop into the largest contiguous area in all of Württemberg . Therefore, the planning for this industrial connecting railway in the Heilbronn municipal council was pushed ahead in the early 1880s.

The main user of the railway systems was to be the Heilbronn salt works . However, the management of the salt works oriented itself more towards the Neckarsulm train station , as this connection could be realized more quickly and was more convenient for traffic down the Neckar in the direction of the Rhine , where the salt works mainly sent. The 2.6 km long industrial connection from the salt works to Neckarsulm was completed in 1886, four years before the connection in Heilbronn. Due to the heavy traffic, changes to the Neckarsulm connection had to be made as early as 1897.

On October 22, 1886, the Royal Directorate General of the State Railways issued a decree in which it was announced that the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Transport Authorities, had approved the track branch in Heilbronn station. Due to numerous construction delays by the railway administration, operations could not officially start until January 30, 1890. The city of Heilbronn spent over 100,000 marks on the creation.

After the completion of the main track, the state railway took over the management. On behalf of the city of Heilbronn, the shunting services from the connection to the Heilbronn train station to the point agreed in the contracts with the connections were carried out by the state railway.

On December 3, 1896, the connection with the saltworks railway and the connection to a pumping station (today: office building of the Brüggemann company ) was completed. This theoretically allowed continuous journeys from Heilbronn to Neckarsulm through the industrial area, which in fact never happened.

As of December 31, 2009, the track length of the industrial railway was 6 km.

  • Handover group Kleinäulein: Consists of four tracks with a usable length between 286 and 645 m. The loading and shunting track is currently closed.
  • Main track I: Starts in Gaswerkstraße from the Kleinäulein transfer group and goes over Industrieplatz through Salzstraße to the end of the tracks. At the height of Gottlieb-Daimler-Straße, the main track I is connected to the main track Neckar II of the port railway via a company site. A track branches off from Salzgrundstraße to the private siding of the salt works. Main track I has a useful length of approx. 2.2 km.
  • Main track II (dismantled): branches off via a hairpin from main track I on Industrieplatz into Weipertstraße and went to just before today's Europaplatz.
  • Main track III: in front of the industrial area, branches off from main track I into Austraße and goes to the end of the track at Imlinstraße. Previously only accessible via main track II, from which it led straight across the industrial area and crossed main track I at ground level. Main track III has a usable length of around 1.2 km.
  • Main track IV: branches off from main track III, runs in Hans-Rießer-Straße and ends at connection II Läpple. Main track IV has a usable length of 425 m.
  • Main track V (not implemented): This main track should run from the Kleinäulein transfer group over a bridge parallel to the tracks of the Frankenbahn and to Christophstraße. In the course of the construction work for the northern tram, the bridge at Sülmertor was demolished.

Port railway

With the construction of the Heilbronn Canal Harbor in 1935, the track systems of the port railway were also built. They are connected to Heilbronn Central Station via a switch at the Hk signal box . The tracks directly on the quay of the Canal Harbor are accessed by a track across Hafenstrasse. Several tracks with different tasks are parallel on the quay. The track on the water is mainly used for loading, the middle track for passage and the loading track for the provision of wagons. The loading and drive-through track belong to the Heilbronn municipal utility. The loading track belongs to the respective connecting parties and is also maintained by them.

On the other side of Hafenstrasse there are six tracks with usable lengths of 430–670 m. This "transfer group Neckar" is used to set up wagons. One of the six tracks serves as a through track to the main Neckar track. This handover group extends to the Peter Bruckmann Bridge. After the bridge there is a level crossing and a two-track transfer group with a usable length of 200 m. The port railway originally ended here. In 1956 the port railway was connected to the industrial railway and the salt works railway via the harbor railway bridge.

Due to the sharp increase in freight volume, a second connecting track to the port tracks was built in 1941 shortly before the Peter Bruckmann Bridge. This track was shut down and dismantled in the 1980s. The third connecting track in front of the port railway bridge was completed in September 1942 and still connects the two-track transfer group with the port tracks.

The Stadtwerke Heilbronn GmbH announced in November 2015 that they wanted to invest in the next three years three million euros in the port rail, but not in the industrial railway, claiming it was not profitable for decades.

The track length of the port railway was 17 km on December 31, 2009.

  • Handover group Neckar: Consists of six tracks with a usable length between 410 and 670 m. Three tracks serve as shunting tracks, one track is the transfer track for wagons to the canal port, one track is the traffic track and at the same time the main track Neckar I and one track serves as a reserve.
  • Main track Neckar I: The track runs from the Neckar transfer group over the port railway bridge and ends in an EnBW siding. Under the Neckargartacher Brücke are the storage group for the salt works and the bypass group for the city , each with two tracks, the track to the salt works and, somewhat downstream, the EnBW siding . In front of the port railway bridge there is the north storage group with two sidings. Main track Neckar I has a usable length of around 3.3 km.
  • Main track Neckar II: branches off after the port railway bridge from main track Neckar I and can only be reached by changing the direction of travel. The track goes over the salt port bridge on the old Neckar to the Karl-Nägele-Brücke. Behind the salt port bridge, the track branches into double-track bypass group I , each with around 250 m usable length. The tracks come together again and later split again into two tracks to bypass group II , which mainly serves the wagons of the Brüggemann company, with a useful length of around 220 m. The track is connected to the main track I of the industrial railway via a 400 m long connecting track via a company site on Gottlieb-Daimler-Straße. Wagons that are not allowed to pass the port railway bridge must be brought in and out of the industrial railway. Main track Neckar II has a usable length of 1.8 km.
  • Main track Neckar III: This track branches off from main track Neckar I and leads into the industrial area Osthafen, crossing Ohm-, Lichtenberger- and Dieselstraße. Along the heavy haulage road, it goes north on the west bank of the east port to the three loading tracks of the company Raiffeisen Kraftfutterwerke Süd GmbH . Main track Neckar III has a usable length of around 1.3 km.
  • Main track Neckar IV (currently closed): After a branch from main track Neckar III, this track crosses Dieselstraße a little further west parallel to main track III and further north the Benzstraße. Main track Neckar IV has a usable length of 852 m.
  • Canal port track: The canal port track is located on the canal port quay between the railway bridge and the mouth of the old Neckar in the canal. It is connected to the Neckar I main track by two connecting tracks. On the one hand with the connecting track south in front of the storage group Neckar at the level of the eastern boarding path and on the other hand with the connecting track north in front of the port railway bridge after the storage group north in Hafenstraße. Tracks N1 to N3 are on the quay. N1 is the water track, N2 the traffic track and N3 the loading track. Tracks N1 and N3 are only partially accessible. Track N2 has a useful length of 1.9 km.

traffic

Two railway companies are currently using the tracks. Six to ten trips take place every day.

The main groups of goods are coal, mineral raw materials (e.g. salt), diesel, steel, scrap, building materials and components for the automotive industry. Occasionally heavy transports such as large transformers for the Heilbronn power plant .
