After the Council of Ministers of the State of Baden-Württemberg had decided on December 18, 1989, the special program “Housing Focuses” with funding for apartments for resettlers and emigrants, the city of Bad Friedrichshall announced on December 20 a settlement construction project, initially called Plattenäcker , for inclusion in the Special program. The area between the Klinikum am Plattenwald , which opened in 1977, and the Amorbach district of Neckarsulm, which was newly created after the Second World War, was selected as the location for the settlement .

Although the original main investor soon dropped out, the city of Bad Friedrichshall managed to quickly build residential buildings on the Plattenwald. In March 1993 the first residents were able to move into their apartments there. By June 30, 2000, Plattenwald already had 3,271 inhabitants. These consisted of 30% foreigners, 40% repatriates and 30% newcomers from the Federal Republic of Germany. Turks took first place among foreigners, followed by Kosovar Albanians. The majority of the repatriates come from the CIS countries.

In 2000, the district's infrastructure included a kindergarten, a primary school, a sports and assembly hall, a community center with an administrative office and a shopping center.

In order to counteract the fact that resettlers are grouped together in closed residential areas, which is often criticized in connection with the state government's priority program, the city has taken various social integration measures, including the establishment of a youth welfare office, the employment of a social worker at the primary school and the establishment of a youth center full-time specialist support. The Plattenwald aktiv association offers integrative offers for senior citizens.

With the integration envisaged is that you Plattenwald has raised for his own district, the 12 town councils and a full-time mayor is represented and in spurious part local election four councilors in the council sent Bad Friedrichshall.

Despite all the integration measures, Plattenwald and the directly adjacent Amorbach are still satellite settlements in Bad Friedrichshall and Neckarsulm, which are not structurally connected to the inner cities of their main towns and in which, as almost pure residential areas, there are few jobs and leisure opportunities. The settlements are considered social hot spots with a “ghetto image”. The press regularly reports on crime in the Plattenwald and Amorbach. In the spring of 2011, a series of violent crimes occurred there. The Heilbronn voice wrote on June 22, 2013: Amorbach and Plattenwald stand for violence, alcohol and crime.
